{"id":128858,"date":"2023-05-16T16:07:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T16:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/?p=128858"},"modified":"2023-05-16T16:07:09","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T16:07:09","slug":"court-remands-seun-kuti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/2023\/05\/16\/court-remands-seun-kuti\/","title":{"rendered":"Court remands Seun Kuti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti has been remanded for 48 hours in police custody for allegedly assaulting a police officer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Kuti, in a 12-second video clip that went viral on May 13, 2023, had assaulted a policeman on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The defendant turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, on Monday, following an order for his arrest by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He was later transferred to Okay the state\u2019s Criminal Investigation Department, Panti and was, on Tuesday, arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate\u2019s Court for assault on a police officer, an offence contrary to Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The prosecution led by S. A Adebese and Morufu Animashaun prayed the court to remand the defendant for 21 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/2023\/05\/16\/the-singers-daughter-was-in-shock-as-the-drunk-policeman-hit-their-car-seun-kutis-manager\/\">Seun Kuti\u2019s counsel<\/a>, led by Femi Falana, SAN, prayed the court to not remand his client, stating that they (the counsel) were not aware of the remand application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun after listening to both parties requested five minutes of recess stating that she needed to deliberate on her own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She however handed her phone to the registrar to avoid calls from both parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When the court resumed sitting, the Magistrate reading out her ruling said she would not rely on police investigation hence she remanded the defendant for 48 hours in police custody. She said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCourt has decided to override any public opinion and pass the judgment of the court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFollowing the remand application presented before the court, I am advising that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Directorate of public prosecutions within 72 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe defendant is hereby remanded for 48 hours in police custody to allow the police to conclude their investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAfter 48 hours, the defendant will be granted bail in the sum of N1m with two responsible sureties, a three years tax payment receipt that is verifiable; one of the sureties must have a landed property within the court jurisdiction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She adjourned the case till May 23, 2023, for mention.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti has been remanded for 48 hours in police custody for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
