{"id":157740,"date":"2024-01-22T08:24:59","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T08:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/?p=157740"},"modified":"2024-01-22T08:24:59","modified_gmt":"2024-01-22T08:24:59","slug":"chidi-mokeme-revisits-battle-with-incurable-condition-bells-palsy-gives-explicit-detail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/2024\/01\/22\/chidi-mokeme-revisits-battle-with-incurable-condition-bells-palsy-gives-explicit-detail\/","title":{"rendered":"Chidi Mokeme revisits battle with incurable condition, Bell\u2019s palsy, gives explicit detail"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Chidi Mokeme has narrated his ordeal with Bell\u2019s palsy disease which has no known cure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">The actor shared details of how it simply happened one particular morning when he woke up and tried to pick up his phone, stand up, but he couldn\u2019t. <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Chidi Mokeme who was in the US at the time said the doctors believed he had a stroke until they later discovered it was Bell\u2019s palsy.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Popular Nollywood actor, Chidi Mokeme has revisited his battle with Bell\u2019s palsy \u2014 a medical condition that causes partial facial paralysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2023, Mokeme revealed that the condition led to his years-long acting hiatus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Detailing his experience on the WithChude podcast, the film star said he discovered he had the condition while residing in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The actor said he woke up one morning and tried to pick up his phone from his side but could not move his hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mokeme said he also tried to get up from the bed but his body was not responding and his face was &#8220;drooping&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The film star said it was at that point his wife rushed him to the hospital for treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The \u2018<em>Shanty Town\u2019<\/em> actor said the medical practitioners had thought he had a stroke but later told him it was Bell\u2019s palsy because \u201c<em>the situation presents itself without a known cause\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_157663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-157663\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-157663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/01\/Screenshot_20240121-192032.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/01\/Screenshot_20240121-192032.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/01\/Screenshot_20240121-192032-275x300.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-157663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Actor Chidi Mokeme<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/2024\/01\/22\/why-i-got-arrested-ended-up-in-jail-chidi-mokeme\/\"><span class=\"s1\">Chidi Mokeme who recently revealed why he was arrested and jailed narrated:<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;This happened as I woke up on a morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Probably, this happened in the middle of the night. Luckily for me, I was away in the US, so I was at home. So I woke up that morning; I tried to reach my phone. The mind wants to pick up the phone, but the body is not responding. It is a very confused state. Because I know what I want to do now, there is a side table, pick up my phone, lay in bed, and then you are stretching. In the mind, that is what you are doing, but your body is not moving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;So I got to turn the other way. I am like, no, something is going on. It is not the phone again. I am like, when do I need to turn like that? Then my wife comes in. And she said small &#8216;hi good morning. Is something wrong with you?&#8217; You know she is in the medical field. I did not see myself lying on the bed, but my face was already halfway down here &#8211; drooping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Then now you cannot respond. So, what I figured out is that you have lost total control of all those facial muscles. She&#8217;s like, \u2018<\/span>Are you having a stroke? The hospital was already waiting outside, of course, they thought it was a stroke and did all these tests.&#8221;.. then you must have a bell&#8217;s palsy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There Is no known cause, but you end up looking like you are having a stroke. A droop on your face. Then, it focuses on your face; it takes away your ability to move those muscles on your face. Which means you cannot blink at Will.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Of course, because there is no known cause, there is no known cure. First, we have to know what is causing it. In some cases, it will resolve itself naturally. In some cases, it stays permanent. In cases where it resolved itself, we have known patients who have waited 24 months, 36 months, and 48 months before they start seeing signs of improvement, and some people just get to live with it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Chidi Mokeme said despite knowing that he had Bell&#8217;s palsy, he insisted on traveling to Lagos for a movie tour. The actor continued:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;The thing with Bell&#8217;s palsy is that it focuses on the face&#8230; I said that is not going to stop me. I am going to get up. That is what I could have told my brother if he came in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do not let that stop you. You have to keep going. That is just a small distraction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;And then I proved it to myself, right there in the hospital bed; I told my guy and said book my flight to Lagos. Change the ticket to tomorrow. The day after the palsy. I had to prove to myself. I left the next day. Got on the plane.
