{"id":209375,"date":"2025-02-28T13:45:43","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T13:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/?p=209375"},"modified":"2025-02-28T13:45:43","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T13:45:43","slug":"jude-okoye-returns-to-prison-as-court-sets-march-3-for-bail-hearing-amid-n1-3bn-fraud-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/2025\/02\/28\/jude-okoye-returns-to-prison-as-court-sets-march-3-for-bail-hearing-amid-n1-3bn-fraud-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Jude Okoye returns to prison as court sets March 3 for bail hearing amid N1.3bn fraud charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>A federal high court in Lagos has adjourned the bail hearing of former manager of defunct Psquare music group, Jude Okoye.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">The court ordered the elder brother of Paul and Peter Okoye be remanded to prison amid the N1.3 billion fraud charges against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Justice Owoeye directed Rudeboy to submit his documents and scheduled the bail ruling for March 3, with trial set for April 14.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On Friday, a federal high court in Ikoyi, Lagos heard Jude Okoye\u2018s bail application over money laundering allegations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Okoye, the elder brother and former manager of the defunct music group Psquare, was on Wednesday arraigned on charges of laundering N1.38 billion, $1 million, and \u00a334,537.59.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The\u00a0Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Okoye and his company Northside Music Ltd before Alexander Owoeye, the presiding judge, on a seven-count charge. The count read in part:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat you, Jude Okoye Chigozie and Northside Music Ltd sometime in 2022, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did directly acquire a landed property known as No 5, Tony Eromosele Street Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos worth \u20a6850,000,000.00 (Eight hundred and fifty million naira),\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThat you, Jude Okoye Chigozie and Northside Music Ltd sometime in 2022, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did indirectly using bureau de change convert the sum of $1,019,762.87 (One million nineteen thousand, seven hundred and six-two dollars eighty-seven cents), domiciled in Access Bank Plc operated by Northside Music Ltd to the naira equivalent and remitted into various bank accounts to conceal that the said fund form part of the proceeds of an unlawful act.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The music mogul, however, pleaded \u201cnot guilty\u201d to the charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Inibehe Effiong, his counsel, informed the court of a pending bail application and requested that the defendant be remanded in the EFCC\u2019s custody pending the hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, Larry Peters Aso, the prosecution counsel, objected to the request, citing congestion in the EFCC custody.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Aso also urged the court to remand the defendant to the correctional facility in Ikoyi since he had taken his plea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During Friday\u2019s sitting, the defendant\u2019s counsel filed a bail application, but the prosecution countered with an affidavit, arguing that Okoye poses a flight risk and may interfere with witnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In response, Inibehe emphasized that the defendant has consistently cooperated with the investigation, honouring all invitations since the case began, and therefore does not constitute a flight risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He also told the court that Paul \u2018Rudeboy\u2019 Okoye was in court to bail out his elder brother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The judge asked Rudeboy to present his documents through his lawyer, adding that he will hear the bail application on March 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Owoeye also scheduled Okoye\u2019s trial for April 14.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The controversy began with the feud between Paul and his twin brother Peter Okoye, which began in 2017. The rift led the brothers to split their group Psquare and pursue solo careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The twins were said to have parted ways after a disagreement on the role of Jude \u2014 their older brother who was their manager then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Though they\u00a0reunited\u00a0in November 2021, their reconciliation was short-lived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In August 2024, Paul revealed another fallout, accusing Peter of orchestrating his arrest by the anti-graft commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Peter, however, denied the allegations and accused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/2024\/08\/18\/efcc-i-took-40-of-p-squares-proceeds-while-peter-paul-shared-30-each-jude-okoye\/\">Jude of diverting millions of dollars from their joint account into a secret company.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He said he was left with no choice but to involve the EFCC after Paul asked him to \u201cdo your worst\u201d during their last conversation on the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Responding to the accusations, Jude\u00a0said\u00a0he had done everything possible, even \u201csacrificing himself,\u201d to mend the rift between his brothers.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal high court in Lagos has adjourned the bail hearing of former manager of defunct Psquare music group, Jude Okoye.
