Award-winning Nigerian dancer and choreographer, <\/span>Kafayat Shafau<\/span>, popularly known as <\/span>Kaffy<\/span>, has opened up about her childhood struggles, revealing how her family fell from wealth to hardship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on the latest episode of <\/span>The Honest Bunch Podcast<\/span>, the Guinness World Record holder recalled being born into affluence, where her parents, <\/span>Alhaji Shafau<\/span> and <\/span>Alhaja Alake Lakonko<\/span>, were prominent Lagos socialites in the league of late business mogul <\/span>MKO Abiola<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Kaffy,<\/span>\u00a0their home was a hub for music legends like King Sunny Ade aka KSA<\/span>, <\/span><\/a>Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (now late)<\/span>, and <\/span>Ebenezer Obey<\/span>, who often sang their praises at parties. She recalled:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cMy parents were the first to spray dollars at parties. You would hear Sunny Ade and Barrister sing their names. Every weekend, these people were at our house.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

However, their fortunes crumbled, forcing the family into survival mode. Kaffy shared that her father relocated to London to work as a floor cleaner, while her mother struggled emotionally to adjust to their new reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

She recounted the harsh years of hunger:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere were times we had no food for weeks. Hunger is a mentor. If water is the only thing available, your body will learn to survive on it. I drank garri for more than seven months without break, yet I didn\u2019t have Kwashiorkor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The dancer also revealed how her mother\u2019s mental health challenges impacted the family:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cShe would have psychotic breaks and gather us in the middle of the house, saying, <\/span>\u2018You are the reason I\u2019m not anywhere in life. Your destiny should start providing for me.\u2019<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
