When the Shuga Band took the stage at Pintos, Allen Avenue, in the late 1990s it was hard to imagine that the man who led the three-piece group with a voice full of swing would one day be spoken of as a national institution. Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga did more than headline weddings and corporate galas. He professionalised an entire class of live entertainers, transformed a small club ensemble into a 14-piece company, and turned personal adversity into advocacy. He died on 30 October 2025 in New Brunswick, Canada. He was 50.<\/p>\n

In 1998 he founded the Shuga Band at Pintos, a compact bar on Allen Avenue owned by Segun Onobolu. What began as a three-piece ensemble soon grew into a 14-member outfit whose name became shorthand for polished, dependable live music across Nigeria\u2019s social calendar. Weddings, state occasions, corporate launches \u2014 if the event required dignity and precision, organisers phoned Shuga. <\/span><\/p>\n

Colleagues describe him as a reformer and a perfectionist. Those standards helped Shuga Band win repeated industry recognition, ranging from Best Live Band awards at the Beatz Awards to repeated nods from City People and other industry bodies, cementing the group\u2019s reputation. <\/span><\/p>\n
