Deveraux Cannick, an attorney for R&B superstar R. Kelly compared him to civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his closing argument at the singer\u2019s federal racketeering trial Thursday September 23.<\/p>\n

Kelly attorney<\/a> Deveraux Cannick said the accused sex fiend is trying to hold the government to account by making prosecutors prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt \u2014 in the same way King fought for rights guaranteed by the Constitution.<\/p>\n

Cannick quoted from King\u2019s \u201cI\u2019ve Been to the Mountaintop\u201d speech, telling jurors the civil rights leader protested in streets across America because the US government at the time was not being fair and true to all citizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of the press,\u201d Cannick quoted King as saying in the historic address.<\/p>\n

Cannick continued that King led the civil rights movement in an effort to make the government \u201cbe true to what\u2019s on paper.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s all Robert is trying to do,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Cannick attacked the prosecution\u2019s case, saying they encouraged witnesses to lie on the stand, misled jurors and pushed a false narrative.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t have to recruit women,\u201d Cannick said. \u201cThat\u2019s the narrative they\u2019re perpetuating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly is accused of leading an enterprise of his \u201cinner circle\u201d employees that allowed him to recruit and sexually abuse girls for more than two decades.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors allege he sexually abused a number of teen girls, including former R&B singer Aaliyah, whom he illegally wed when she was 15 years old.<\/p>\n
