Will Smith has been banned from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years after he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said on Friday.<\/p>\n

Smith is also not permitted to attend any other events held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the next decade.<\/p>\n

The Board\u2019s decision as set out in a letter from Academy chiefs did not revoke the best actor award Smith won last month for \u201cKing Richard,\u201d nor did it mention any ban on future Oscar<\/a> nominations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,\u201d wrote president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson.<\/p>\n

Academy governors convened on Friday morning to discuss actions against Smith, with board members Steven Spielberg and Whoopi Goldberg among those invited to rule on the actor\u2019s fate.<\/p>\n

The meeting of top brass from Hollywood\u2019s leading industry body was originally set to discuss suspending or expelling Smith, but he preemptively resigned from the group.<\/p>\n

Actors do not need to be members of the Academy to receive nominations, although each year\u2019s Oscar nominees \u2014 and winners \u2014 are voted for by members of the group.<\/p>\n

Smith\u2019s actions during a live global broadcast stunned audiences and cast a shadow over both the night\u2019s big winners and the Tinseltown showcase event itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage,\u201d said the Academy letter.<\/p>\n

It added: \u201cThis action we are taking today in response to Will Smith\u2019s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some had called for Smith to be stripped of his best actor Oscar, which he won for his performance in tennis biopic \u201cKing Richard\u201d less than an hour after striking Rock on the same stage.<\/p>\n

Rock\u2019s brother Kenny Rock told the Los Angeles Times that Smith \u201cbelittled (Chris Rock) in front of millions of people that watch the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

But taking away Smith\u2019s award was considered unlikely, as the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Roman Polanski did not have their Oscars revoked when they were expelled from the Academy in the wake of sexual assault scandals.<\/p>\n

Traditionally the best actor Oscar winner is invited to present the following year\u2019s best actress award \u2014 an honor Smith will not be granted.<\/p>\n

Smith climbed onto the Oscars stage and slapped Rock across the face in response to a joke the comic made about his wife\u2019s closely cropped hair.<\/p>\n

Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has alopecia, a hair loss condition.<\/p>\n

The Academy has said Smith was asked to leave the Oscars ballroom shortly after the attack.<\/p>\n

But that claim has been disputed, including by Smith\u2019s representatives, and the show\u2019s producer Will Packer reportedly told Smith to remain and accept his statuette.<\/p>\n

Rock was asked by Los Angeles police whether he wanted to file a report against Smith, but he declined.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room,\u201d said Friday\u2019s letter from Academy chiefs.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short \u2014 unprepared for the unprecedented.\u201d<\/p>\n

The letter thanked Rock for \u201cmaintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last week, Smith apologized to Rock, describing his actions at the Oscars as \u201cshocking, painful and inexcusable,\u201d before resigning from the Academy days later.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate,\u201d said Smith \u2014 only the fifth Black man to win the movie world\u2019s highest individual award for an actor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
