{"id":90789,"date":"2022-07-30T13:25:26","date_gmt":"2022-07-30T13:25:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/?p=90789"},"modified":"2022-07-30T13:25:26","modified_gmt":"2022-07-30T13:25:26","slug":"tax-evasion-shakira-may-face-eight-year-jail-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/2022\/07\/30\/tax-evasion-shakira-may-face-eight-year-jail-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax evasion: Shakira may face eight-year jail term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Global music superstar Shakira, might face\u00a0 prison sentence of more than eight years following the rejection of\u00a0a plea deal on accusations of tax evasion.<\/p>\n<p>Spanish prosecutors in Barcelona disclosed this on Friday as they demanded a fine of nearly 24 million euros ($24.5 million) from the 45-year-old singer, whom they accuse of defrauding the Spanish tax office out of 14.5 million euros on income earned between 2012 and 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The\u201cHips don\u2019t Lie\u201d songstress, who has sold over 60 million albums, rejected a plea deal on Wednesday, saying in a statement through her lawyers that she was \u201cabsolutely certain of her innocence\u201d and had decided to let the case go to court, \u201cconfident\u201d that her innocence would be proven.<\/p>\n<p>A formal referral to court has not yet been announced, neither has a trial date been set.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for Shakira, one of the biggest names in the global music industry, say an agreement remains possible until the start of any trial.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/entertainment\/2021\/07\/29\/shakira-to-face-trial-in-spain-for-allegedly-evading-13million-in-tax\/\">Shakira<\/a> moved to Spain in 2011 when her relationship with FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique became public but maintained official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015. The couple, who share two children, announced their separation in June.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the star slammed the \u201ccomplete violation of her rights\u201d and \u201cabusive methods\u201d carried out by the prosecutor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>She claimed prosecutors were \u201cinsisting on claiming money earned during my international tours and the show \u2018The Voice&#8217;\u201d on which she was a judge in the United States, when she was \u201cnot yet resident in Spain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Shakira was on the singing competition show between 2013 and 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyers say that until 2014 she earned most of her money from international tours, moved to Spain full time only in 2015 and has met all tax obligations.<\/p>\n<p>She says she has paid 17.2 million euros to Spanish tax authorities and that she has \u201cno debt to the Treasury for many years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A Barcelona court in May dismissed an appeal from the singer to drop the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Shakira was named in one of the largest ever leaks of financial documents in October 2021, known as the \u201cPandora Papers\u201d, among public figures linked to offshore assets.<\/p>\n<p>With her mix of Latin and Arabic rhythms and rock influence, three-time Grammy winner Shakira scored major global hits with songs such as \u201cHips don\u2019t Lie\u201d, \u201cWhenever, Wherever\u201d and \u201cWaka Waka\u201d, the official song of the 2010 World Cup.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Global music superstar Shakira, might face\u00a0 prison sentence of more than eight years following the rejection of\u00a0a plea deal on accusations of tax evasion.
