Burial rites for Jnr Pope: Family faces N30 - N40 million demand for non-river interment

A Nigerian man has disclosed that the family of late actor Jnr Pope is expected to pay between N30 to N40 million for traditional rites to ensure his burial away from the river.

This demand arises from the belief that individuals who die by the riverside are claimed by river spirits, making special ceremonies and compensations necessary to avoid spiritual consequences.

The informant, speaking in a live video, emphasized that when someone drowns in water, the river spirits lay claim to the body.

According to the informant, If the family chooses to bury the deceased away from the river, they are obligated to appease these spirits by making substantial financial contributions.

However, even after settling the river spirits, the informant cautioned that this is not a guaranteed safeguard against potential risks.

An eyewitness present at the scene of Jnr Pope’s tragic accident corroborated the claims, stating that the actor’s family was fully aware of these customs and traditions.

Despite the warnings from the river people about the consequences of their decision to bury Jnr Pope away from the river, the family stood firm in their choice.

Fortunately, the situation did not escalate further, as the river people did not cause any trouble or attempt to reclaim the body forcibly.

They simply informed the family about the potential repercussions of their decision, leaving the final choice to the bereaved family.

“Jnr Pope’s family might spend N30Million – N40Million to perform some traditional rites before they will be able to Bury him anywhere else. Because according to tradition anyone who passed away by drowning in a river can’t be buried outside that river,” the man said.
