Tuesday will mark Ayuba Wabba’s departure from his position as president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) after eight years in service.

Wabba, who was originally elected in 2015 and then re-elected in 2019, will formally step down from the NLC’s leadership during the 13th Quadrennial National Delegate, which will take place in Abuja

Speaking during the commissioning of a guest house project named after Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, the pioneer President of NLC, on Monday, Wabba said unionism was not only about contestations and agitations but also, resource management and investment.

He added that in the past, organised labour thought it would be wise to be independent, hence the reasons for devising different means of generating incomes apart from relying external funding which at times can mar the union struggles.

On his part, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is still committed to improving the minimum wage of workers to boost productivity.

Mustapha, who was the special guest of honour, said Buhari-led administration is concerned about improving the welfare of public service and had paid the arrears of retired Airways workers.

While inaugurating the court, he said that the two-storey building was a delight for the NLC and the entire workers, adding that “these achievements and legacies are for the Nigerian people.

”I commend the outgoing NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, for delivering the edifice that will yield additional income to the Congress,” the SGF said.

Meanwhile, there are indications that National Executive Committee of the NLC may be electing the Deputy President of the Congress, Joe Ajaero as Wabba’s successor.
