{"id":101573,"date":"2021-11-02T12:40:26","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T11:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=101573"},"modified":"2021-11-02T12:40:26","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T11:40:26","slug":"cbn-to-roll-out-enaira-app-for-persons-without-bank-accounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/02\/cbn-to-roll-out-enaira-app-for-persons-without-bank-accounts\/","title":{"rendered":"CBN to roll out eNaira app for persons without bank accounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will soon unfold an eNaira application for persons without bank accounts to boost financial inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed by Brian Popelka, chief<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> executive officer (CEO) of Bitt Inc. during a recent interview with CoinDesk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bitt Inc, a Barbados-based fintech company, is the CBN&#8217;s technical partner for<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the eNaira project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Popelka, the present version of the eNaira app is for people with bank accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The digital currency currently has two applications \u2014 eNaira speed wallet (for individuals) and eNaira speed merchant wallet (for businesses).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Both apps are available for download on the Google Play store for Android phones and App Store for iPhone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIn Nigeria, it is a methodological rollout; this is our initial stage. A phone app specific for unbanked folks will be rolling out very soon, considering the fast follow-up from us,\u201d Popelka said in the interview.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSo that is how we see the financial inclusion question coming through. As far as interest goes, it is hard to say this early what the interest is. I imagine that the concept has a newness to it; people want to understand the inner workings of it and what to use it for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the CEO, launching the eNaira app was challenging, but the company relied on its past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/27\/cbn-initiates-website-for-enaira-nigerias-first-digital-currency\/\">digital currency<\/a> experience in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt is a sort of methodological rollout. We like the idea that there are stages. Nigeria has a very foursome rollout for all of the users for which we hope to get to over many years, which means that they and we, of course, are in it for the long haul,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cPost-launch though, as you can imagine, as the initial rollouts, it is just sign-ups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWell, the central bank has minted and disbursed digital currencies to several key financial institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAnd therefore, there are merchants and consumers that are just getting into the app store, downloading the app, and moving their traditional currencies into digital format at this stage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Popelka said the government would not be able to access the individual purchase history using the eNaira app but would be able to access bulk transaction histories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He, however, said that banks would have access to individual transactions to track fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Popelka explained that financial institutions have roles to play in ensuring more people trust and use digital currency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will soon unfold an eNaira application for persons without bank accounts to boost financial inclusion.
