{"id":101911,"date":"2021-11-03T06:27:38","date_gmt":"2021-11-03T05:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=101911"},"modified":"2021-11-03T06:42:14","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T05:42:14","slug":"okunbor-shell-awarded-800m-contracts-to-nigerian-companies-in-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/03\/okunbor-shell-awarded-800m-contracts-to-nigerian-companies-in-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Okunbor: Shell awarded $800m contracts to Nigerian companies in 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Country chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria (SCiN), Osagie Okunbor has disclosed that contracts worth $800 million were awarded to Nigerian companies in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known on Tuesday by\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Okunbor, who is also the managing director (MD) of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) at a panel session during a strategic conference organised by the National Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC) in Lagos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He was represented at the event by Ed Ubong, managing director, Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Okunbor said that Shell assists Nigerian companies to achieve the necessary certification for their products and services to ensure that they qualify for tenders and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/14\/oyo-govt-set-to-revoke-contracts-drags-22-firms-to-efcc\/\">contracts<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIn 2020, 100 percent of SCiN contracts, worth $800 million, were awarded to Nigerian companies,\u201d NAN quoted him as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSCiN has also provided access to nearly $1.5 billion in loans to 764 Nigerian vendors under the Shell Contractor Support Fund, since 2012.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Okunbor further emphasised the importance of reducing the oil and gas industry\u2019s reliance on imports and creating new markets in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAt Shell, we recognise that local content is key to surviving a post-COVID 19 pandemic world, and Shell will continue to invest in this space,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe remain committed to building capacity and competence in the country to enable more Nigerians to participate directly and indirectly in the gas value chain and pump more money into the local economy by supporting Nigerian companies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said Shell was also investing in a gas portfolio to increase supply for Nigerian and international customers via an expanding network of plants, pipelines and export terminals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Okunbor said they were being developed with joint venture partners, the Nigerian government and communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHarnessing our vast gas resources is key to the development of the country,\u201d Okunbor said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNatural gas gives us the ability to lift millions of people out of energy poverty, giving them the power to improve their physical health, wellbeing and standard of living.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt also gives us a pathway to economic growth and development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is not only through direct exploration and trading of gas resources but by providing reliable power supply for the manufacturing and industrial sectors which are the major growth engines for developing economies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Country chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria (SCiN), Osagie Okunbor has disclosed that contracts worth $800 million were awarded to Nigerian companies in 2020.
