Governor of Zamfara state, Bello Matawalle has stated that the political elite sabotaged the amnesty programme launched for bandits in his state.<\/p>\n

This was stated on Friday by the governor during the Urgent Conversations programme of RadioNow.<\/p>\n

Recall that Mattawale was one of the governors calling for a dialogue and reconciliation approach\u00a0to solving the banditry problem besetting Nigeria\u2019s north-west.<\/p>\n

In August, the governor claimed that\u00a0the tactic had \u201cyielded a lot of results\u201d in Zamfara.<\/p>\n

However, Matawalle changed his stance in September, announcing that his administration will no longer grant amnesty<\/a> to bandits because\u00a0\u201cthey have failed to embrace the peace initiative earlier extended to them\u201d.<\/p>\n

The governor while explaining the cause of the change in strategy blamed politicians \u201cthat have connections with the criminals\u201d who were \u201ctelling them all sorts of things so that they shouldn\u2019t believe the government\u2019s amnesty and reconciliation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mattawale said security agencies have confessions from \u201c2000 informants\u201d who have indicted several politicians.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter we initiated the dialogue, you know it was supposed to be a collective effort \u2014 between the government, the people of the state and other political gladiators. Unfortunately, when the government is trying to make sure we have peace, some political elites are thinking they don\u2019t want us to succeed,\u201d the governor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo they\u2019ve been making so many unprecedented comments about the dialogue issues and the reconciliation. And some of them that have connections with the criminals have been telling them all sorts of things so that they shouldn\u2019t believe the government\u2019s amnesty and reconciliation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have some records. Some of the informants that were arrested, we have over 2000 informants under the custody of security agencies, and some of them have opened up and indicted so many people. They said some of the politicians are the ones funding them, telling them the state and federal government are not serious on what we promise to them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
