{"id":106289,"date":"2021-11-12T12:55:33","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T11:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=106289"},"modified":"2021-11-12T12:55:33","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T11:55:33","slug":"icpc-to-arraign-ex-fiiro-dg-for-taking-18-years-salaries-with-fake-certificate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/12\/icpc-to-arraign-ex-fiiro-dg-for-taking-18-years-salaries-with-fake-certificate\/","title":{"rendered":"ICPC to arraign ex-FIIRO DG for taking 18 years\u2019 salaries with fake certificate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission may arraign a former Director-General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, Chima Igwe, on Friday (today) for allegedly collecting salaries for 18 years with a phantom doctorate certificate.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by Punch Metro, Igwe would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/26\/icpc-frsc-arrests-15-road-safety-officials-over-extortion-of-motorists\/\">arraigned<\/a> before Justice Sherifat Solebo of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja.<\/p>\n<p>Sources said the arraignment would border on \u201cuse of false\/fake PhD certificate and using office to confer corrupt\/unfair advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crisis at FIIRO started after the immediate past DG of the institute, Prof. Gloria Elemo, left office in April 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Igwe\u2019s appointment as acting DG was opposed by the governing board after the PhD with which he gained promotions for over 18 years became a subject of an investigation by the ICPC.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106294\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106294\" style=\"width: 696px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-106294\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/11\/ify_davies\/2021\/11\/12\/Chima-Igwe-696x397-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/11\/ify_davies\/2021\/11\/12\/Chima-Igwe-696x397-1.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/11\/ify_davies\/2021\/11\/12\/Chima-Igwe-696x397-1-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ex FIRO DG, Chima Igwe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, however, overruled the board, insisting that he should be the acting DG.<\/p>\n<p>After investigations by the ICPC confirmed that the doctorate, which he claimed he obtained at the Universite D\u2019Abomey Calavi, Benin Republic, in 2001, was non-existent, he was removed.<\/p>\n<p>He was also demoted to the position he held more than 18 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>That decision pitted the board against the minister, who began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/16\/efcc-arraigns-5-sokoto-government-officials-over-n500m-scam\/\">moves<\/a> to reinstate Igwe, including writing the President, Muhammadu Buhari to confirm him as substantive DG.<\/p>\n<p>The minister also had face-offs with the then board Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Gwarzo, who insisted that Igwe deserved prosecution and not reinstatement for the alleged fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The President, in a letter dated September 7, 2021, rejected Onu\u2019s request to confirm Igwe and ordered the ICPC to prosecute him for \u201cgiving false information to his employers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The minister later dissolved the FIIRO board and others, saying they had served out their tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to get a spokesperson for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/25\/icpc-secures-final-forfeiture-of-919202-found-with-federal-high-court-staff\/\">ICPC<\/a>, Mrs Azuka Ogugua, to react to the arraignment were abortive, as she did not take her calls which rang out on Wednesday and Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>She had yet to respond to a text message from newsmen as of the time of filing this report.<\/p>\n<p>But a source confided in the Punch Metro that arrangement had been concluded for Igwe to be arraigned on Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission may arraign a former Director-General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, Chima Igwe, on Friday (today) for allegedly collecting salaries for 18 years with a phantom doctorate certificate.
