This underscores the need for short-term policies to support welfare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe simple simulations suggest that the share of Nigerians living below the national poverty line could have increased from 40.1 per cent to 42.8 per cent, due to the food price <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/15\/nigerias-inflation-falls-further-to-15-99-in-october\/\">inflation<\/a> witnessed between June 2020 and June 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also disclosed that poorer Nigerians were more willing to get COVID-19 vaccination unlike richer Nigerians, which further showed that the poor were more concerned about contracting the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPoorer Nigerians are more willing than richer Nigerians to be vaccinated. About 98 per cent of respondents in the poorest consumption quintile reported that they would agree to be vaccinated, compared to 74 per cent of those in the richest consumption quintile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs such, the differences between rich and poor respondents in their willingness to be vaccinated echo similar differences in their respective levels of concern about contracting COVID-19,\u201d the report read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also disclosed that some Nigerians did not have access to soap and water to maintain good hygiene during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe most easily accessible COVID-19 preventative measure is washing one\u2019s hands with soap and water. However, insufficient access to soap and water for washing was a barrier for some households. As of June 2020, 24 per cent of households reported having insufficient soap, and seven per cent reported having insufficient water for washing hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYet, access to hygiene-related basic needs increased between June 2020 and November 2020, with the share of households having insufficient soap to wash hands in the last seven days declining from 24 per cent to 11 per cent,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-fe3f5cc\" data-amp-original-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report further disclosed that there has been low coverage of social protection programmes during the COVID-19 crisis in Nigeria, adding that just four per cent of households had received support from social safety net programs in the form of direct cash transfers from federal, state, or local government between March 2020 and March 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Bank disclosed that the\u00a0increase in prices that occurred between June 2020 and June 2021 could push about six million Nigerians into poverty.
