{"id":109358,"date":"2021-11-19T11:55:16","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T10:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=109358"},"modified":"2021-11-19T11:55:16","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T10:55:16","slug":"three-nigerians-arrested-for-using-fake-facebook-profile-to-defraud-female-doctor-of-n7-5m-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/19\/three-nigerians-arrested-for-using-fake-facebook-profile-to-defraud-female-doctor-of-n7-5m-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Nigerians arrested for using fake Facebook profile to defraud female doctor of N7.5m in India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three Nigerians and two others have been arrested by the police for allegedly using a fake profile on Facebook to dupe a 51-year-old female doctor of Rs 13.5 lakh (approximately N7.5 million) in New Delhi, India.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Indian Express, the police disclosed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/16\/security-guard-conspires-with-kidnap-gang-to-abduct-his-bosses-in-edo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gang<\/a> posed as a doctor from Italy and subsequently under the pretext of sending gifts, allegedly defrauded her into paying the amount.<\/p>\n<p>The Mumbai police officials identified the three Nigerians arrested as- Chijioke Desmond Iheka (38), Kelechi Jonathan Dike (44), Chidozie Morris (35), and the two others as Pankaj Singh (24) and Sarfaraz Ansari (35).<\/p>\n<p>The incident took place between May and June in the western suburbs of the town as the gang approached her through a fake profile on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/03\/man-remanded-in-prison-for-calling-gov-ganduje-and-his-sons-kano-thieves-on-facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>, and deceived her by first sending a friend request from a profile named Marco Kelvin Lucas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the bio read that he is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/15\/resident-doctor-at-university-of-calabar-teaching-hospital-commits-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doctor<\/a> from Italy, she accepted the request following which the two started chatting,\u201d said an officer.<\/p>\n<p>Later, through the fake profile, they alleged that they were sending her 85,000 Euros, watches and handbags after which one of their female accomplices reached out to her claiming that the bag containing these valuables had been seized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder the pretext of paying custom duty fees, custom penalty, insurance fee and conversion procedure fee, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/18\/lagos-prince-friend-arrested-over-38200-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frauds<\/a> made her pay Rs 13.59 lakh,\u201d said deputy commissioner of police Rashmi Karandikar.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian Express stated that the woman then submitted a complaint. A case was registered under relevant sections of cheating and cheating by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/21\/kwara-poly-expels-four-students-rusticates-six-others-for-exam-fraud-impersonation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">impersonation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the help of technical evidence, they managed to trace one of the culprits, identified as Pankaj Singh (24),\u201d added Karandikar.<\/p>\n<p>During his interrogation, names of other culprits were identified, who were also arrested from Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>Following their arrest, the police seized 25 mobile phones, four laptops, one tablet phone and 10 debit cards.<\/p>\n<p>An officer said, \u201cWe have learnt that they had similarly created several profiles on Facebook while they have duped several persons using similar modus operandi.
