The Ekiti East constituency I bye-election has been suspended by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).<\/p>\n
WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that the election was suspended following the outbreak\u00a0of violence in various polling units in the LGA.<\/p>\n
Recall that a policewoman and two others were killed by suspected\u00a0political thugs during the attack.<\/p>\n
INEC resident electoral commissioner for Ekiti, Tella Adeniran in a statement disclosed that\u00a0\u201cthe situation is such that, a conducive environment no longer exists for further electoral activity at the PUs and the Collation centers,\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn view of this development, the Commission has suspended the election forthwith.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adeniran added that \u201cthe safety of electoral officials, security personnel and election materials, as well as the credibility of the process, cannot be guaranteed\u201d, adding that the state commissioner of police is \u201cfully aware of the situation\u201d.<\/p>\n
The statement further noted that \u201cit is unfortunate that in spite of the effort of the commission in giving Nigerians free, fair, credible and inclusive election, some people appear to be unprepared for an improved electoral process\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Ekiti East constituency I seat became vacant following the death of Juwa Adegbuyi, the former representative.<\/p>\n
