{"id":111057,"date":"2021-11-23T12:09:43","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T11:09:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=111057"},"modified":"2021-11-23T12:09:43","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T11:09:43","slug":"romance-scam-nigerian-man-sentenced-to-10-years-imprisonment-for-defrauding-65-year-old-woman-in-guyana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/23\/romance-scam-nigerian-man-sentenced-to-10-years-imprisonment-for-defrauding-65-year-old-woman-in-guyana\/","title":{"rendered":"Romance scam: Nigerian man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for defrauding 65-year-old woman in Guyana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Nigerian national, Uche Raymond Okoye has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment for defrauding a 65-year-old woman of $6 million (approximately N2.5 billion) in Guyana.<\/p>\n<p>Okoye, also known as Uche Parker who is currently facing several other fraud charges before the Magistrate\u2019s Court was sentenced on ten of those charges on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/07\/romance-scam-nigerian-man-found-guilty-of-defrauding-65-year-old-pensioner-of-6m-in-guyana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Okoye was found guilty<\/a> November 03, 2021 on ten counts of Obtaining Money by False Pretence from the woman, a pensioner.<\/p>\n<p>At Friday\u2019s sentencing hearing before Magistrate Anette Singh at the Georgetown Magistratre\u2019s Court, he was sentenced to one year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/22\/man-sentenced-to-life-imprisonment-for-defiling-6-year-old-sister-in-law-in-jigawa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imprisonment<\/a> on each of the ten charges.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-103916 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/11\/kunlenet07\/2021\/11\/07\/Uche-Raymond-Okoye.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/11\/kunlenet07\/2021\/11\/07\/Uche-Raymond-Okoye.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/11\/kunlenet07\/2021\/11\/07\/Uche-Raymond-Okoye-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/11\/kunlenet07\/2021\/11\/07\/Uche-Raymond-Okoye-768x642.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During a plea in mitigation Uche agreed to repay the victim some of the money he defrauded her. There are other matters still being prosecuted against him by the Special Organised Crime Unit.<\/p>\n<p>Several ongoing romance package scams and pyramid schemes are reportedly being operated in Guyana by Nigerian Nationals who are in Guyana illegally; where victims are lured by persons they meet online who influence them to part with their cash.<\/p>\n<p>This organized crime is being investigated by the Special Organised Crime Unit and citizens of Guyana are encouraged not to send money to persons they meet online.<\/p>\n<p>The matter was prosecuted by Attorney-at-Law Tuanna Hardy from the Special Organised Crime Unit and the accused was represented by Attorney at Law Melvin Duke.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Nigerian national, Uche Raymond Okoye has been sentenced to ten years imprisonment for defrauding a 65-year-old woman of $6 million (approximately N2.5 billion) in Guyana.
