{"id":111214,"date":"2021-11-23T18:53:03","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T17:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=111214"},"modified":"2021-11-23T18:53:03","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T17:53:03","slug":"cbn-speaks-on-first-bank-ownership-tussle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/23\/cbn-speaks-on-first-bank-ownership-tussle\/","title":{"rendered":"CBN speaks on First Bank ownership tussle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has stated that the apex monetary authority will ensure that the right things are done regarding the shareholding tussle at First Bank of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated by Emefiele while speaking with<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0journalists on Tuesday after the monetary policy committee\u2019s two-day meeting at the CBN headquarters in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He noted that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the capital market regulator is responsible for issues relating to shareholding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs it affects the running and operations of the bank, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/21\/cbn-diversion-of-agric-fund-may-attract-five-year-jail-term\/\">(CBN)<\/a> will take preeminence in ensuring that the right things are done,\u201d Emefiele said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the CBN governor, First bank is very relevant to the Nigerian banking sector because it is the oldest bank in the country \u2014 it was established in 1894.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed happiness that citizens are in a scramble to acquire First Bank\u2019s shares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst Bank remains the oldest bank in Nigeria. It is the most aggressively domestically important bank in Nigeria,\u201d Emefiele said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything happens to First Bank, it means something has happened to the Nigerian banking system. That is why we are taking our guidance about how to get the bank afoot seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix years ago, like I said, because of an aggressive buildup of non- performing loans, the share price of First Bank was about N2. We took it up. Then, everybody was running away from the shares of First Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have cleaned the balance sheet now, people are seeing that the money making machine, First Bank, is back on its feet. They are on the race for profitability. They are now competing for the shares of First Bank. Why should I quarrel about that? I am happy to see that they are competing for the shares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNaturally, returns are sent to CBN about individual shareholder. And of course, if our position is not in tandem with that of SEC, we will talk to SEC about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, I think we should take the position of SEC as the regulator of the capital market because regulating share price and ownership is the sole responsibility of SEC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would not want to override SEC on these issues but we will continue to work with them. We have a very good relationship with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the ownership tussle between Femi Otedola and Tunde Hassan-Odukale broke out in October, SEC is yet to take a position on the matter as the market regulator.<\/p>\n<p>Otedola had acquired 5.07% stake in the bank, leading to media reports that he had become the single largest shareholder and was in a pole position to take over as chairman of FBN Holdings Plc, the holding company of First Bank of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>However, a document surfaced on social media which credited Tunde Hassan-Odukale, another shareholder, with 5.36%. His shares were partitioned into two: 4.16% and 1.20%.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Before then, Hassan-Odukale\u2019s stake was estimated at 3%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In October, the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) queried FBN Holdings Plc for\u00a0classifying the shareholdings of Hassan-Odukale and related parties into two.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The National Pension Commission (PenCom) also clarified that funds invested\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in First Bank Holdings Ltd (FBNH) by Leadway Pensure Ltd belong to retirement savings account (RSA) holders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The pension regulator said the equity investments in FBN Holdings made by Leadway Pensure Ltd on behalf of the pension funds under its management \u201care in the name of the pension fund and belong to the RSA\u201d and \u201ccannot be appropriated or classified as shareholdings of any related party to the PFA\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">PenCom\u2019s position appears to put to rest claims that<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Tunde Hassan-Odukale and related entities own 5.36% stake in FBNH \u2014 which would have made him the single largest shareholder.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has stated that the apex monetary authority will ensure that the right things are done regarding the shareholding tussle at First Bank of Nigeria.
