{"id":111687,"date":"2021-11-24T15:27:22","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T14:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=111687"},"modified":"2021-11-24T15:27:22","modified_gmt":"2021-11-24T14:27:22","slug":"lais-reaction-to-endsars-panel-report-shows-fg-not-ready-for-justice-segalink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/24\/lais-reaction-to-endsars-panel-report-shows-fg-not-ready-for-justice-segalink\/","title":{"rendered":"Lai&#8217;s reaction to #EndSARS panel report shows FG not ready for justice, Segalink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A member of the Lagos state judicial panel identified as Segun Awosanya has stated that the federal government does not appear ready for justice in relation to the findings of the panel.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Tuesday by Awosanya when he featured on Channels Television\u2019s \u2018Politics Today\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Awosanya said the report of the panel was a \u201cprofessional\u201d work carried out by people of \u201cintegrity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that on November 15, the\u00a0judicial panel submitted two documents \u2014 a consolidated report on cases of police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/23\/endsars-edo-govt-pledges-to-pay-n190m-compensation-to-victims-of-police-brutality\/\">brutality<\/a> and another on the Lekki shooting incident \u2014 to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of the state.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving the report, Sanwo-Olu constituted a four-member committee to review the report and come forward with a white paper on 0it within the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report which was leaked hours after it was submitted, the panel said the \u201ckilling of unarmed protesters by soldiers on October 20, 2020 could be described in the context of a massacre\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the panel\u2019s findings, Lai Mohammed, minister of information, said the report is riddled with\u00a0\u201cdiscrepancies, errors, speculations and inconsistencies\u201d, and dismissed it as \u201cfake news\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to react to Mohammed\u2019s dismissal of the use of \u201cmassacre\u201d, Awosanya said any of the terms used by the panel was \u201cclearly defined in context\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Segalink, who is also the convener of the #EndSARS campaign, said he would not want to conclude on the basis of the comments of the information minister until the Lagos state government releases the white paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever term was used in the recommendations or the findings presented to the government \u2014 state or federal \u2014 was clearly defined in context,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think that rather than react to the sound of the word or rather than react based on what the word might mean to them literally, they should read the report with understanding and know exactly where the panel is coming from and then do the needful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a country. This is a democracy and the people seek leadership; leadership that can actually do justice to issues. The essence of the panel itself is not to indict or punish anybody precisely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is actually to bring about findings and recommendations that would ensure and ascertain healing of our society not denials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would the panel be set up in the first instance if the government knows exactly what went wrong, what happened or what transpired at locus locum? Why would you want to investigate if you already know?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is really sad for some of us to hear this because the panel was set up to actually assuage the people, to actually make the public know that the government is sincere enough to engage, to investigate and to come out with findings that they would do something about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut all these reactions show that they are not ready to do justice to the work done by the panel. I really won\u2019t want to conclude like I said. It\u2019s best to wait for the official response of the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve submitted to the Lagos state government. He gave his word that in two weeks he is going to respond to that, and after that response, we can have a robust debate on the outcome of that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than project, react, catastrophise, I think it\u2019s best we keep our powder dry for now.
