{"id":111805,"date":"2021-11-25T05:41:14","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T04:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=111805"},"modified":"2021-11-25T06:05:03","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T05:05:03","slug":"efcc-most-banking-sector-funds-committed-by-insiders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/25\/efcc-most-banking-sector-funds-committed-by-insiders\/","title":{"rendered":"EFCC: Most banking sector frauds committed by insiders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that the majority of frauds in the banking sector were committed by insiders especially information and communication technology (ICT) employees.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Wednesday by Abbah Sambo, the <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">head of cybercrime section, EFCC, representing Abdulrasheed Bawa at a two-day national seminar in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The seminar is on banking and allied matters for judges organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Sambo, the increasing rate of cybercrime despite efforts by the commission to curb the practice was regretful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sambo said that in previous years, young people involved in cybercrime were not ICT-savvy, but times had changed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/23\/endsars-even-goats-have-owners-lai-mohammed-queries-absence-of-victims-family-members\/\">ICT<\/a> graduates were now proponents of the crime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He also ascribed the heightened perpetuation of cybercrime to moral perversion and peer group influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe rate at which young men are perpetrating cybercrime is seriously alarming,\u201d Sambo said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhen we arrest these criminals, one major reason they give for going into the crime is peer influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cTheir friends are into it and they want to run with guys that drive the best cars and have the best girls in town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMost times when we arrest these criminals, we find them with a lot of assets that are registered in the names of their parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cCars in the names of their mothers and houses in the names of their fathers. There is a fundamental issue relating to decay in moral coverage in the society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sambo further said that paucity of knowledge was the greatest challenge in fighting cybercrime, noting that the criminals were getting more sophisticated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said the criminals were highly skilled in communicating seamlessly, thereby sharing knowledge, unlike law enforcement agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cA lot of the people trying to combat the crime in the field tend to lack the drive because they do not have the adequate training,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He emphasized the need for accelerated sensitisation and engagement with youths to educate them on the ills of crime, especially starting from the secondary school level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that the majority of frauds in the banking sector were committed by insiders especially information and communication technology (ICT) employees.
