{"id":112107,"date":"2021-11-25T15:44:03","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T14:44:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=112107"},"modified":"2021-11-25T18:12:39","modified_gmt":"2021-11-25T17:12:39","slug":"reps-probe-uncompleted-n200bn-lokoja-benin-road-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/25\/reps-probe-uncompleted-n200bn-lokoja-benin-road-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Reps probe uncompleted N200bn Lokoja-Benin Road project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation of the rehabilitation and expansion of the road linking Lokoja in Kogi State to Benin in Edo State which has gulped N200bn.<\/p>\n<p>A member of the House, Johnson Oghuma, called for a probe into the alleged slow pace of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/25\/deep-blue-project-fec-approves-n6-3bn-contract-for-waterways-surveillance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">project<\/a> at the plenary on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Moving the motion titled, \u2018Need to Investigate the Utilisation of Over 200 Billion Naira on Construction of Lokoja to Benin Road,\u2019 Oghuma noted that the dualisation of the Lokoja\u2013Benin federal highway, from Obajana junction to Benin City, was awarded to a consortium of contractors in 1999 with a completion date of December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker said, \u201cOver N200bn has been budgeted from 1999 to 2021, in addition to the various loans and interventions projects such as SUKUK, among others. The road is a major highway connecting routes from the North to East, South\u2013South and Western parts of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe House is dismayed that the Lokoja\u2013Benin section is now a death trap, as people can no longer travel safely, and what was a three-hour trip has now become a whole-day\u2019s journey and sometimes impassable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe House is concerned that if no urgent intervention to construct the Lokoja-Benin Road is taken, lives and goods worth billions of naira will be destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe House is desirous of the need to unearth the latent and obvious reasons behind the total abandonment of the road projected for completion in December 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adopting the motion, the House mandated its Committees on Works and Finance to \u201cinvestigate the slow state of works(sic) on the Lokoja\u2013Benin federal highway, compared to the colossal amounts budgeted and expended on the highway, and report back within four weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation of the rehabilitation and expansion of the road linking Lokoja in Kogi State to Benin in Edo State which has gulped N200bn.
