{"id":112551,"date":"2021-11-26T13:41:27","date_gmt":"2021-11-26T12:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=112551"},"modified":"2021-11-26T13:41:27","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T12:41:27","slug":"afdb-approves-new-five-year-strategic-plan-to-increase-water-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/26\/afdb-approves-new-five-year-strategic-plan-to-increase-water-security\/","title":{"rendered":"AfDB approves new five-year strategic plan to increase water security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The board of directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has stated that it has approved a new five-year water strategy for 2021-2025.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in statement released on Wednesday by the bank and titled <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cTowards a Water-Secure Africa\u2019\u2019 in Abidjan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the bank, the strategic plan was approved on November 17th to increase water security in Africa and to foster its sustainable, green and inclusive socio-economic growth and development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Beth Dunford, the bank\u2019s Vice-President for agriculture, human and social development, said it was a significant milestone for the bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is a significant milestone for the Bank in terms of seeing water development and sanitation as key components toward improving the quality of life for the people of Africa,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dunford also stated that the strategy would help the bank to expand its role as the continent\u2019s partner while promoting integrated development and management of Africa\u2019s water sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The strategy is expected to guide AfDB\u2019s implementation of its policy on water, which it approved earlier in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The water strategy\u2019s four pillars underscore the importance of water and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/11\/makinde-suspends-monthly-sanitation-exercise-indefinitely\/\">sanitation<\/a> for socio-economic development; sustainability, resilience, and inclusivity; food production, nutrition and hydropower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In his part, Osward Chanda, the bank\u2019s director for water development and sanitation, said that water is a key enabler for many of the United Nations\u2019 SDGs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWater is a key enabler for many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the Bank considers water to be essential for life, health, dignity, empowerment, environmental sustainability, peace and prosperity,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The bank said that more than 100 of its stakeholders provided inputs to develop the strategy, which the board lauded as exemplary.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The board of directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) has stated that it has approved a new five-year water strategy for 2021-2025.
