{"id":112683,"date":"2021-11-26T21:14:16","date_gmt":"2021-11-26T20:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=112683"},"modified":"2021-11-26T21:14:16","modified_gmt":"2021-11-26T20:14:16","slug":"adamawa-records-149-cases-of-rape-in-10-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/26\/adamawa-records-149-cases-of-rape-in-10-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Adamawa records 149 cases of rape in 10 months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Permanent Secretary, Adamawa Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Saso Ali has disclosed that\u00a0149 cases of rape were recorded in the last 10 months in the state.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Friday by Ali via an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola.<\/p>\n<p>She said the cases were recorded between January and October, 2021, adding that 123 of the cases were minors.<\/p>\n<p>She said the state GBV incident data indicated that survivors in 86 per cent of the cases desired access to justice and recieved services by the police.<\/p>\n<p>The Permanent Secretary said that 89 per cent of the perpetrators were charged to courts after receiving services from the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the reports I received from Adamawa Hope Center, the Gender Based Violence (GBV) is on the increase in spite of the sensitisation and awareness creation on the ills of rape by government agencies and development organisations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are yet to secure a single conviction on the cases,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act more awareness creation needs to be done for people to have better understanding of the law.<\/p>\n<p>Ali called on the police and the ministry of justice to ensure speedy trial and conviction of the perpetrators to serve as deterrent to others.<\/p>\n<p>She said that the measure would help to reduce the menace to the barest minimum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we do not have conviction, some bad elements will continue to commit rape because they may feel that nothing will happen to them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>(NAN)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Permanent Secretary, Adamawa Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Saso Ali has disclosed that\u00a0149 cases of rape were recorded in the last 10 months in the state.
