{"id":113099,"date":"2021-11-27T22:02:55","date_gmt":"2021-11-27T21:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=113099"},"modified":"2021-11-27T22:25:49","modified_gmt":"2021-11-27T21:25:49","slug":"investigate-akume-over-n4-6bn-fraud-benue-govt-tells-efcc-icpc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/27\/investigate-akume-over-n4-6bn-fraud-benue-govt-tells-efcc-icpc\/","title":{"rendered":"Investigate Akume over N4.6bn fraud, Benue govt tells EFCC, ICPC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Benue state has called on anti-government agencies to investigate and prosecute George Akume, minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs over allegations of fraud amounting to N4.56 billion.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a letter written by the state attorney general and commissioner for justice, Micheal Gusa where he claimed that<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Akume embezzled the state\u2019s fund while he was governor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The letter was addressed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/25\/efcc-most-banking-sector-funds-committed-by-insiders\/\">(EFCC)<\/a>, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and the inspector-general of police\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gusa alleged that the former governor unilaterally approved the sum of N117 million which is above his approval limit without recourse to the executive council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;The reckless financial expenditures was said to be for consultancy and feasibility study for Mbatiav Cement which turned out to be a white elephant project that never saw the light of the day,\u201d the letter reads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cFurther findings according to the petition also alleged financial indiscipline, abuse of fiscal policies and misappropriation for various contracts amounting to N3,125,882,409.25 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cDuring the audit report, it was also discovered that under the watch of the former governor, a loan of N150 million was taken from defunct Afri-Bank in December 2000 for purchase of shares in companies but the money was transferred to All Securities Limited for which no receipts were found for the transaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was also discovered during the audit that the former governor, Akume, claimed to have executed \u2018many projects\u2019 that were never located, which the petition deemed to be an aberration of due process, abuse of fiscal policies and criminal violation of relevant laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cRegrettably, many of such projects, valued at N1,074,017,023.65 billion were not accounted for as there was no evidence of their execution anywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Benue state has called on anti-government agencies to investigate and prosecute George Akume, minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs over allegations of fraud amounting to N4.56 billion.
