{"id":113150,"date":"2021-11-28T17:12:25","date_gmt":"2021-11-28T16:12:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=113150"},"modified":"2021-11-28T17:12:25","modified_gmt":"2021-11-28T16:12:25","slug":"president-buhari-challenges-universities-to-develop-covid-19-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/28\/president-buhari-challenges-universities-to-develop-covid-19-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"President Buhari challenges Universities to develop COVID-19 Vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged Nigerian universities to intensify their research in order to develop COVID-19 vaccine to tackle the dreaded virus afflicting the country.<\/p>\n<p>The President, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, gave the challenge at the 5th and 6th combined convocation of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that Nigerian Universities were supposed to be centres for scientific and technological discoveries, inventions, values and character formation as well as drivers of societal development.<\/p>\n<p>The president added that the development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/26\/au-deploys-regional-covid-certificate-endorses-togos-vaccine-pass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vaccine<\/a> would fortify Nigerians\u2019 immune system against the virus.<\/p>\n<p>He further noted that his administration remained committed to tackling the challenges of sustainable funding for research, capacity building and employment creation.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201cYou all know that in the year 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic began its devastating effect on the education sub-sectors, leading to the destruction of universities\u2019 academic activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI therefore urge and encourage the universities to intensify their research to come up with a more potent vaccine to fortify our immune system against this dreaded virus\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also tasked the universities to explore available opportunities, including research collaboration with allied industries and development partners to create other sources of revenue generation.<\/p>\n<p>According to the President, such will support his economic diversification drive.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, said the federal government is committed and determined to combat and defeat all acts of criminality across the country for meaningful development to thrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur security is a collective responsibility, we must join hands with the government by providing security agents with useful information to enable proactive mitigation of any of these occurrences,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Armaya\u2019u Hamisu-Bichi, urged the federal government to dig trenches around the main campus of the institution because of the current security challenges in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged Nigerian universities to intensify their research in order to develop COVID-19 vaccine to tackle the dreaded virus afflicting the country.
