{"id":113486,"date":"2021-11-29T05:56:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T04:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=113486"},"modified":"2021-11-29T06:12:53","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T05:12:53","slug":"woman-granddaughter-die-hoodlums-attack-firemen-others-in-ogun-tanker-explosion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/29\/woman-granddaughter-die-hoodlums-attack-firemen-others-in-ogun-tanker-explosion\/","title":{"rendered":"Ogun tanker explosion: Firemen beaten for late arrival as woman and granddaughter die"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fuel-laden tanker exploded and killed a woman and her grandchild in the Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA had reported that the incident occurred on Sunday around 04:45am when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/28\/video-petrol-tanker-explodes-in-abeokuta-as-residents-scoop-fuel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tanker fell<\/a> while making its way inbound Rounder from Oju-Irin, Lafenwa area of Abeokuta.<\/p>\n<p>Pandemonium, however, broke out few hours after the incident when some traders and hoodlums in the market began scooping fuel from the fallen tanker.<\/p>\n<p>Attempts by the police to stop the action reportedly angered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/22\/video-witness-who-testified-before-lagos-endsars-panel-narrates-how-she-was-attacked-by-hoodlums\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hoodlums<\/a>, who allegedly ignited a fire that triggered the explosion.<\/p>\n<p>The police allegedly shot two people while controlling the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the two people killed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/17\/two-die-14-buses-burnt-in-anambra-tanker-explosion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explosion<\/a>, scores of shops in the market were also burnt and few others reportedly looted by the hoodlums.<\/p>\n<p>Five men of the state fire service were allegedly beaten to a pulp for not arriving early to save lives and property.<\/p>\n<p>The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, while confirming the incident, lamented that some residents went to the scene, scooped fuel and engaged in \u201cother unwholesome act which regrettably sparked off the fire that engulfed the whole area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo lives were lost in the unfortunate inferno, a grandmother and grandchild, while property worth millions of naira was also destroyed,\u201d Akinbiyi added.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the corpses were deposited in the morgue of the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.<\/p>\n<p>Akinbiyi said the mob vandalised two patrol vans belonging to the TRACE Divisional Command, Abeokuta, and two heavy-duty vehicles belonging to the federal and state fire services.<\/p>\n<p>The TRACE spokesman noted that some personnel were also assaulted during the rescue operation.<\/p>\n<p>The Operational Commander of the Fire Service, Ogun State, who simply identified himself as Ilesanmi, said the agency received a call around 8am that a tanker fell and he immediately deployed his men in the scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the hoodlums didn\u2019t allow us to perform our duty. They attacked our vehicle; the vehicle was damaged and all my men brutalised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I\u2019m talking to you, they are nowhere to be found because they have to look for an alternative road to escape for their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was at the scene; it is not that someone told me. I came in my private vehicle. It was because I didn\u2019t wear the uniform. If not, they would have attacked me also,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if the attack was due to the late arrival of his men, Ilesanmi said, \u201cThe fire service did not get there late. The reason is this: anytime there are issues like this, they will like to vandalise shops. That\u2019s their target. Their target is not to complement our effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive of my officers, including the driver, and all vehicle windscreens, were vandalised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Director, Ogun State Emergency Management Agency, Ige Olufolarin, also confirmed the attack, lamenting that the officials were hindered by hoodlums.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cTheir target was to actually loot the stores around the area and that was why we were there to guard against such.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said five suspects were arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Oyeyemi said the police had cordoned off the area to avoid loss of lives, but the hoodlums sabotaged the effort.<\/p>\n<p>While denying that the police shot two people during the incident, he accused the hoodlums of igniting fire from the market, which engulfed the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive suspects have been arrested and they will be charged to court,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A fuel-laden tanker exploded and killed a woman and her grandchild in the Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
