{"id":113744,"date":"2021-11-29T15:41:42","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T14:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=113744"},"modified":"2021-11-29T15:41:42","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T14:41:42","slug":"unicef-74-6-of-gombe-state-residents-poor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/29\/unicef-74-6-of-gombe-state-residents-poor\/","title":{"rendered":"UNICEF: 74.6% of Gombe state residents poor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that\u00a074.6 per cent of residents of Gombe State are poor.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Monday by the Social Protection Specialist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/24\/unicef-reveals-number-of-nigerian-schools-attacked-students-abducted-in-2021\/\">UNICEF<\/a> Bauchi Field Office, Mr Yusuf Auta at the opening of a workshop on the Development of Implementation Plan and Costing of Gombe State Social Protection Policy on Monday in Jos.<\/p>\n<p>Auta explained that the figures were captured in the social protection policy document recently developed for the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent statistics shows that 74.6 per cent of Gombe State residents are living below poverty line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis simply suggests that seven out of 10 Gombe State residents are poor, \u201che said.<\/p>\n<p>Auta also decried the high level of multi-dimensional\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/24\/unicef-reveals-number-of-nigerian-schools-attacked-students-abducted-in-2021\/\">poverty<\/a> among children in the state.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that many children in the state were suffering from multi-dimensional poverty<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Multi-Dimensional\u00a0Child Poverty Analysis in Nigeria shows that 71.9 per cent of children in Gombe are multi-dimensuonally poor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis simply means that majority children in the state don\u2019t have access to nutrition, healthcare services, education, housing, sanitation, water and information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, most children in Gombe are denied access to these basic necessities of life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He commended the state government for developing the policy document, adding that it would place the state on the path of growth and development.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the policy if implemented would promote the well-being of children and women in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUNICEF is happy to be part of this process and this is because it affects the lives of women and children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUNICEF pays attention to women and children because it is the credo of development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith proper education, health, nutrition, water and sanitation, poverty reduction, among others, the child is at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial protection policy provides the platform for UNICEF to support women and children to have a better life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we are here to come up with an implementation plan which will be in accordance with the budget provision of the state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He promised that UNICEF would continue to support the state with technical assistance to address some of the issues which the policy seeks to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that the meeting had participants from government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), traditional institutions, development partners and the media, among others.<\/p>\n<p>(NAN)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) has disclosed that\u00a074.6 per cent of residents of Gombe State are poor.
