{"id":113813,"date":"2021-11-29T18:20:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T17:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=113813"},"modified":"2021-11-29T18:20:00","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T17:20:00","slug":"ayade-reveals-why-he-suspended-calabar-carnival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/29\/ayade-reveals-why-he-suspended-calabar-carnival\/","title":{"rendered":"Ayade reveals why he suspended Calabar carnival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive Governor of Cross River, Ben Ayade has suspended the 2021 annual Calabar carnival due to insecurity and the outbreak of Omicron COVID-19 variant.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Monday by the deputy chief press secretary to the governor, Linus Obogo in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.<\/p>\n<p>Obogo said\u00a0the decision to suspend the annual festival was reached at a meeting with the governor, the State Executive Council members and stakeholders of the carnival.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the decision to suspend the annual festival was unanimous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gathering was to unveil the theme of this year\u2019s carnival but based on the emergence of the new variant called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/29\/botswana-confirms-19-cases-of-covid-19-omicron-variant\/\">omicron<\/a> and the advise by health experts that it kills faster than other variant, the governor then puts it before the stakeholders and it was unanimously agreed that the carnival be suspended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe carnival band leaders and other stakeholders agreed that for the purpose of public health and safety, the carnival be suspended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, there is an emerging security report which indicates that the event may be taken over by some hoodlums.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo avoid all of these from happening, it was advised that the carnival be suspended so that people are not caught unawares,\u201d Obogo said.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the State Commissioner for Tourism and Culture, Mr Eric Anderson, on Nov. 28 told NAN that the annual festival would be held inside the U.J Esuene Sport Stadium due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson told NAN that the stadium would help to control the crowd and space the seating arrangement for people to watch the live show.<\/p>\n<p>(NAN)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive Governor of Cross River, Ben Ayade has suspended the 2021 annual Calabar carnival due to insecurity and the outbreak of Omicron COVID-19 variant.
