{"id":11553,"date":"2021-03-22T07:21:21","date_gmt":"2021-03-22T06:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=11553"},"modified":"2021-03-22T07:21:21","modified_gmt":"2021-03-22T06:21:21","slug":"nafdac-warns-nigerians-against-fake-astrazeneca-vaccination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/22\/nafdac-warns-nigerians-against-fake-astrazeneca-vaccination\/","title":{"rendered":"NAFDAC warns Nigerians against fake AstraZeneca vaccination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has advised Nigerians to ensure the Astrazeneca vaccine being administered on them had the original label.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said the warning was imperative to ensure people did not risk being vaccinated with the fake Astrazeneca vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>The position of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/15\/nafdac-raises-alarm-on-fake-covid19-vaccines-in-circulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAFDAC<\/a> is contained in a statement signed by the agency\u2019s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, on Sunday, in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyeye explained that the original Oxford Astrazeneca University (AZOU) vaccine, had been contracted to India\u2019s world largest vaccine manufacturer, Serum Institute of India (SIIPL), to produce in large quantity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAZOU gave the license of its vaccine to Serum Institute of India PVT Ltd, (SIIPL), to manufacture this vaccine at a commercial scale. SIIPL is the largest vaccine manufacturer in the world and the company got the license by signing the manufacturing agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSIIPL gave the vaccine the trade name COVISHIELD, it is the result of a cooperation and a technology transfer from AstraZeneca \u2013 University of Oxford to SIIPL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSIIPL is now the world\u2019s largest vaccine manufacturer by number of doses produced and sold globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 1.5 billion doses, which include Polio vaccine, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Hib, BCG, r-Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyeye added that the vaccines manufactured by SIIPL were accredited by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and were being used in about 170 countries across the globe in their national immunisation programme.<\/p>\n<p>She added that both COVISHIELD manufactured by SIIPL and COVID-19 vaccine Astrazeneca, manufactured by Astrazeneca\/Oxford University vaccine are the same vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>According to Adeyeye, ChAdOx1 nCoV- 19 coronavirus vaccines (Recombinant), COVISHIELD, was granted Emergency Use Listing (EUL) by the World Health Organisation on Feb.15, and that it was one of the listed vaccines under the COVAX Facility.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has advised Nigerians to ensure the Astrazeneca vaccine being administered on them had the original label.
