{"id":115553,"date":"2021-12-02T20:59:52","date_gmt":"2021-12-02T19:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=115553"},"modified":"2021-12-02T20:59:52","modified_gmt":"2021-12-02T19:59:52","slug":"white-paper-lagos-evading-responsibility-on-endsars-report-over-computer-errors-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/02\/white-paper-lagos-evading-responsibility-on-endsars-report-over-computer-errors-panel\/","title":{"rendered":"White paper: Lagos evading responsibility on #EndSARS report over computer errors &#8211; Panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Lagos judicial panel on police brutality has disclosed that the state government is trying to evade responsibility by citing computer errors in the #EndSARS report.<\/p>\n<p>According to the panel\u2019s report, protesters were killed at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020 in what could be described in context as a \u201cmassacre\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos government in a white paper on the report accepted 11 out of the 32 recommendations of the panel, rejected one and accepted six with modifications.<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos government also said the finding of the panel that nine persons died is \u201cirreconcilable\u201d with the testimony of\u00a0John Obafunwa, a pathologist.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the Lagos government\u2019s white paper in a statement released by Ebun-Olu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/02\/adegboruwa-speaks-on-white-paper-on-lagos-endsars-report-says-it-contains-inaccuracies-and-coverups\/\">Adegboruwa<\/a>, the panel said the state could have reached out to members for clarifications where necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe chairperson, all panel members and indeed the secretariat of the Panel were all within the reach of the LASG for clarifications if there was sincerity, other than picking holes in order to evade responsibility on account of computer errors and tabular alignments of cut and paste,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>The panel also said the duplication of names on its list of casualties was as a result of a computer error, adding that they considered several dictionary definitions of the word \u2018massacre\u2019 before it was used.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a misnomer from the spreadsheet that ought to have terminated at Page 297 but mistakenly overlapped to Page 298 with the same names and same numbers,\u201d the panel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the computer error of the secretariat of the panel which could have been corrected as the secretariat of the panel was domiciled in the ministry of justice at all times.<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;GoogleActiveViewInnerContainer&quot;style=&quot;left:0px;top:0px;width:100%;height:100%;position:fixed;pointer-events:none;z-index:-9999;&quot;\">\u201cIn any event, the mere fact of repetition of same names on a table cannot without more, nullify the uncontroverted evidence of death.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"&quot;GoogleActiveViewInnerContainer&quot;style=&quot;left:0px;top:0px;width:100%;height:100%;position:fixed;pointer-events:none;z-index:-9999;&quot;\">\u201cThe panel considered several definitions of the word MASSACRE and adopted one of the dictionary meanings of MASSACRE as being \u2018the act or instance of killing a number of usually helpless or unresisting human beings under circumstances of atrocity or cruelty\u2019.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"&quot;GoogleActiveViewInnerContainer&quot;style=&quot;left:0px;top:0px;width:100%;height:100%;position:fixed;pointer-events:none;z-index:-9999;&quot;\">\u201c\u200bThe Panel considered that firing live bullets at unarmed, peaceful and unresisting protesters which led to the death of some of them, was cruel and atrocious on the part of the military and the police.
