{"id":116242,"date":"2021-12-04T08:08:37","date_gmt":"2021-12-04T07:08:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=116242"},"modified":"2021-12-04T08:08:37","modified_gmt":"2021-12-04T07:08:37","slug":"who-no-reports-of-deaths-from-omicron-variant-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/04\/who-no-reports-of-deaths-from-omicron-variant-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO: No reports of deaths from Omicron variant yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation has disclosed that it had not seen any reports of deaths caused by the new Omicron variant of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The health organisation further stated that it was\u00a0collecting evidence about the variant of concern (VOC), as countries around the world impose travel restrictions to halt its spread.<\/p>\n<p>But despite a growing number of countries registering infections with the new variant, no deaths have yet been reported to the UN health agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not seen reports of Omicron-related deaths yet,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/03\/pope-francis-accepts-resignation-of-archbishop-of-paris-who-had-intimate-relationship-with-woman\/\">WHO<\/a> spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re collecting all the evidence and we will find much more evidence as we go along.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more countries\u2026 keep testing people, and looking specifically into the Omicron variant, we will also find more cases, more information, and, hopefully not, but also possibly deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindmeier also urged people to be mindful of the Delta variant, which accounts for 99.8 percent of sequences uploaded to the GISAID global science initiative with specimens collected in the last 60 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOmicron may be on the rise, and we may come to a point where it takes over to be the dominant variant, but at this point, the very dominant variant remains Delta,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Lindmeier added: \u201cThe restrictions that were put into place in many countries just two weeks ago \u2014 economical closures again, lockdowns in some areas, closures of Christmas markets in parts of Europe \u2014 this was done before Omicron because of a rise of Delta cases. Let\u2019s not lose sight<\/p>\n<p>The WHO has said it will take several weeks to get a full picture of the transmissibility and disease severity of Omicron and to assess how vaccines, work against the new variant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we need to do is we need to take all these observations, assessments and tests and get this information together and then have the experts look at it, carefully weigh it and come up with the assessment. That will still take some time,\u201d said Lindmeier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreliminary data show that there is higher transmissibility.
