{"id":116319,"date":"2021-12-04T10:59:19","date_gmt":"2021-12-04T09:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=116319"},"modified":"2021-12-04T10:59:19","modified_gmt":"2021-12-04T09:59:19","slug":"dowen-college-why-perpetrators-must-be-punished-delta-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/04\/dowen-college-why-perpetrators-must-be-punished-delta-govt\/","title":{"rendered":"Dowen College: Why perpetrators must be punished \u2013 Delta govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As more Nigerians weigh into the controversy surrounding the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/03\/how-dowen-college-once-suspended-same-bullies-who-killed-my-son-father\/\">death of 12-year-old student of Dowen College<\/a><\/strong>, Sylvester Oromoni, Delta State government has reacted.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Saturday, Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa disclosed that his government was determined to pursue the case till justice was served and perpetrators punished.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, an example needs to be made in order to serve as very strong deterrence against future occurrences.<\/p>\n<p>His statement read: \u201cLast night, I spoke to Mr. Sylvester Oromoni, the father of late Sylvester Oromoni Jr., the Dowen College student who unfortunately died under very controversial and unclear circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the call, I expressed my agreement with the decision of the Lagos State government to launch an investigation into the death of Sylvester, a native of Warri South LGA in Delta State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a government that places priority on the lives of our citizens within and outside the state, we are determined to pursue this case to the end. The matter must be investigated, perpetrators apprehended, punished, and made an example of, to serve as a very strong deterrence against future occurrences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Okowa extended his prayers and support to the Oromoni family at this difficult time.<\/p>\n<p>Oromoni was reported to have died from internal injuries he sustained during an assault by fellow students.<\/p>\n<p>However, Dowen College Principal, Mrs. Adebisi Layiwola, in a statement denied any form of bullying or attack on the student.<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos State government on Friday shut down the school and immediately ordered investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As more Nigerians weigh into the controversy surrounding the death of 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Sylvester Oromoni, Delta State government has reacted.
