{"id":117412,"date":"2021-12-06T18:49:10","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T17:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=117412"},"modified":"2021-12-06T18:49:10","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T17:49:10","slug":"dowen-college-sylvester-oromonis-family-hires-femi-falana-over-sons-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/06\/dowen-college-sylvester-oromonis-family-hires-femi-falana-over-sons-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Dowen College: Sylvester Oromoni&#8217;s family hires Femi Falana over son&#8217;s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of late 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, who died in a controversial circumstances has hired the firm of human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, to prosecute the case against the school.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter dated December 6, 2021 and signed by Taiwo Olawale, the lawyers have written to the office of Lagos State\u2019s Chief Coroner requesting an inquest into the circumstances leading to the death of his client\u2019s child.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA had reported that the deceased\u2019s cousin, Perry Oromoni, has taken to social media to alleged that some senior pupils of the college\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/gist\/2021\/12\/01\/12-year-old-boy-allegedly-beaten-to-death-by-fellow-students-for-refusing-to-join-cult-in-lagos-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beat him up in his hostel room for refusing to join a cult<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of pain in his legs and hip following an injury he sustained while playing football.<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos State Government had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/03\/lagos-govt-shuts-down-dowen-college-indefinitely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shut down the school<\/a>\u00a0indefinitely to ensure thorough investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The letter titled \u201cRequest for Inquest into the Tragic Death of Sylvester Oromoni killed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/06\/dowen-college-late-sen-kashamus-family-speaks-on-relationship-between-their-son-and-sylvester-backs-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dowen College<\/a>, Lekki, Lagos,\u201d noted that based on the briefings by the family, the late student died as a result of injuries allegedly inflicted on him by his seniors at the school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The letter in part reads; \u201cGiven the needless death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/05\/sylvester-oromoni-dowen-college-reveals-actions-being-taken-by-the-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sylvester Oromoni<\/a>, we are compelled to request you to use your good offices to cause a coroner\u2019s inquest to be conducted into the cause of death of this young and promising boy and make appropriate recommendations pursuant to Section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner\u2019s Law 2007 that states that an inquest shall hold whenever a coroner is informed that the death of a deceased person within his coroner district is as a result of a death in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We hereby request your lordship to conduct an inquest into the circumstance surrounding this tragic death and we are confident that your lordship will accede to our request with utmost urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The family of late 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, who died in a controversial circumstances has hired the firm of human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, to prosecute the case against the school.
