{"id":117537,"date":"2021-12-07T04:18:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T03:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=117537"},"modified":"2021-12-07T04:19:41","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T03:19:41","slug":"dowen-college-sylvesters-family-demands-coroner-inquest-into-sons-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/07\/dowen-college-sylvesters-family-demands-coroner-inquest-into-sons-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Dowen College: Sylvester&#8217;s family demands coroner inquest into son\u2019s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni (Junior), a pupil of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, who died under controversial circumstances, has demanded a coroner inquest into his death.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA had reported that the deceased\u2019s cousin, Perry Oromoni, has taken to social media to alleged that some senior pupils of the college\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/gist\/2021\/12\/01\/12-year-old-boy-allegedly-beaten-to-death-by-fellow-students-for-refusing-to-join-cult-in-lagos-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beat him up in his hostel room for refusing to join a cult<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of pain in his legs and hip following an injury he sustained while playing football.<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos State Government had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/03\/lagos-govt-shuts-down-dowen-college-indefinitely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shut down the school<\/a>\u00a0indefinitely to ensure thorough investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Education stormed the school in the early hours of Sunday and sealed the premises.<\/p>\n<p>The Falana and Falana Chambers, on behalf of the family, petitioned the chief coroner of Lagos State on Monday, demanding an inquest into the death.<\/p>\n<p>The petition read in part, \u201cWe have been briefed by the family of the late Sylvester Oromoni, a student of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/05\/dowen-college-sylvesters-father-vows-to-delay-sons-burial-till-family-gets-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dowen College<\/a>, Lekki, Lagos, who died from the injuries he allegedly sustained from the beating by his colleagues who wanted him to join their cult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the needless death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/06\/dowen-college-late-sen-kashamus-family-speaks-on-relationship-between-their-son-and-sylvester-backs-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sylvester Oromoni<\/a>, we are compelled to request you to use your good offices to cause a coroner\u2019s inquest to be conducted into the cause of death of this young and promising boy and make appropriate recommendations pursuant to Section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner\u2019s Law 2007, which provides that an inquest shall hold whenever a coroner is informed that the death of a deceased person within his coroner district is as a result of a death in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the wife of the governor of Lagos State, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has commiserated with the parents of the victim.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Sanwo-Olu spoke on Monday during the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence advocacy visit to Dolphin Junior and High School on the Lagos Island.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cI am aware that the Lagos State Government is at the moment investigating the incident and honestly, it is something we are not happy about.
