{"id":117640,"date":"2021-12-07T09:14:25","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T08:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=117640"},"modified":"2021-12-07T09:14:25","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T08:14:25","slug":"nigeria-accounted-for-27-of-half-of-malaria-deaths-worldwide-in-2020-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/07\/nigeria-accounted-for-27-of-half-of-malaria-deaths-worldwide-in-2020-who\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria accounted for 27% of half of malaria deaths worldwide in 2020 &#8211; WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that six countries including Nigeria, accounted for around 50 percent of malaria deaths worldwide in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Monday by the health organisation in its world malaria report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to WHO\u2019s latest\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/global-malaria-programme\/reports\/world-malaria-report-2021\"><span class=\"s2\">report<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, there was an estimate of 241 million malaria cases and 627,000 malaria deaths \u2014 mostly of children under five \u2014 worldwide in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The 2020 figure represents about 14 million more cases in 2020, compared to 2019, and 69,000 more deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the report, Nigeria was also among six countries that accounted for 55 percent of all cases worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAbout 96% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/06\/just-in-who-endorses-groundbreaking-malaria-vaccine\/\">malaria<\/a> deaths globally were in 29 countries. Six countries \u2013 Nigeria (27%), the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Democratic Republic of the Congo (12%), Uganda (5%), Mozambique (4%), Angola (3%) and\u00a0<\/span>Burkina Faso (3%) \u2013 accounted for just over half of all malaria deaths globally in 2020,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTwenty-nine countries accounted for 96% of malaria cases globally, and six countries \u2013 Nigeria\u00a0<\/span>(27%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12%), Uganda (5%), Mozambique (4%), Angola (3.4%) and Burkina Faso (3.4%) \u2013 accounted for about 55% of all cases globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the report, the COVID pandemic disrupted malaria services, leading to a marked increase in cases and deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The WHO, in a statement, said the situation could have been far worse, adding that at the beginning of the pandemic, it had projected that \u2013 with severe service disruptions \u2013 malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africa\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/23-04-2020-who-urges-countries-to-move-quickly-to-save-lives-from-malaria-in-sub-saharan-africa\">could potentially double\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It, however, noted that many countries took urgent action to shore up their malaria programmes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said this year\u2019s world malaria report surveys the extent of damage wrought by the COVID pandemic on the global malaria response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEven before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, global gains against malaria had levelled off,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThanks to the hard work of public health agencies in malaria-affected countries, the worst projections of COVID\u2019s impact have not come to pass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNow, we need to harness that same energy and commitment to reverse the setbacks caused by the pandemic and step up the pace of progress against this disease.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that six countries including Nigeria, accounted for around 50 percent of malaria deaths worldwide in 2020.
