The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on Arms and Ammunition, has summoned the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Attahiru Ibrahim, to appear before it and clarify issues related to the purchase of arms for the army.<\/p>\n

The committee also summoned Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emiefele, to give details of monies released for the purchase of military<\/a> hardwares.<\/p>\n

The two will appear before the committee on April 7.<\/p>\n

The summon was a sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion by Bede Eke (PDP-Imo) at Monday\u2019s sitting.<\/p>\n

They were billed to appear on March 12, but did not do so.<\/p>\n

The committee was constituted to investigate the purchase of arms and ammunition by military and paramilitary organisations in the country.<\/p>\n

In the motion, Mr Eke said that the summon became necessary following the refusal of the officials to honour several invitations extended to them by the committee.<\/p>\n

According to the lawmaker, it was time for the committee to take hard decisions against the public officers.<\/p>\n

\u201cCBN has been a problem to this House and they cannot operate the way they are operating and this House will keep quiet because we approve their budget.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are we asking for? Come and tell us how much we have paid for the purchase of arms; we have given you the right to fair hearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you hiding anything? We will not allow it, if there is something you are hiding because you are CBN, we will not allow it.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are killed everyday. I want to move a motion because we do not have time; we come here everyday, sit for hours and wait for a government agency.<\/p>\n

\u201cI move that we summon especially the COAS and CBN. Enough is enough! Let them be summoned, that is when they will know we are serious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Eke said the committee had invited the COAS four times and the CBN Governor five times, and they have refused to honour the invitations.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Chairperson of the Committee, Olaide Akinremi (APC-Oyo), said the committee expected the Ministries of Finance, Defence and Interior, as well as the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to also appear.<\/p>\n

He, however, said the Ministry of Defence had earlier written to the committee to seek a later date to appear, and that its request was granted.<\/p>\n

Mr Akinremi said the committee had been waiting for three hours for the invited public officers, but had failed to show up.<\/p>\n

According to him, the House had already passed a resolution in accordance with the COVID-19 protocols not to stay for more than three hours at committee meetings.<\/p>\n

The chairperson explained that the invitations extended to the public officers were in line with section 88 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.<\/p>\n

According to him, the section confers powers on the committee to summon any public officer to appear and give account.<\/p>\n

Contributing to the motion, Ibrahim Aliyu (APC-Sokoto), said the public officers needed to come to terms with the importance of the investigation.<\/p>\n

Mr Aliyu, who represents Wurno\/Rabah Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, said the committee has information and documents and was only giving the officers an opportunity for a fair hearing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
