{"id":1185,"date":"2021-02-23T15:47:29","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T14:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=1185"},"modified":"2021-02-23T15:47:29","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T14:47:29","slug":"ban-on-cryptocurrency-cbn-gov-appears-before-senate-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/23\/ban-on-cryptocurrency-cbn-gov-appears-before-senate-committee\/","title":{"rendered":"Ban on cryptocurrency: CBN gov appears before Senate committee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CNB) Godwin Emefiele on Tuesday appeared before the Senate to defend the ban on cryptocurrency trading in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate invited Emefiele to brief its committees on the opportunities and threats of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/20\/fbi-hushpuppi-linked-to-north-korean-bank-robbers-and-money-launderers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cryptocurrency<\/a> on the nation\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>CBN\u2019s director of banking supervision Bello Hassan in a circular said cryptocurrencies are \u201cissued by unknown and unregulated entities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan said cryptocurrencies are \u201cincreasingly being used to conduct\u201d many illegal activities including money laundering, terrorism financing, purchase of small arms and light weapons, and tax evasion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, CBN directed banks and other financial institutions to \u201cidentify persons and\/or entities transacting in or operating cryptocurrency exchanges within their systems and ensure that such accounts are closed immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease, note that breaches of this directive will attract severe regulatory sanctions. This letter is with immediate effect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The CBN further noted that the use of cryptocurrencies in Nigeria contravenes existing laws.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Istifanus Gyang during plenary on last Thursday raised a motion on the CBN\u2019s directive to stop financial institutions from transactions in cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>Other lawmakers called for caution, stating that while cryptocurrency has its negative sides and it has become the fastest-growing form of financial transactions all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>They argued that technology has changed the way business is conducted in Nigeria and the country cannot run away from cryptocurrency.
