{"id":119357,"date":"2021-12-10T19:03:35","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T18:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=119357"},"modified":"2021-12-10T19:03:35","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T18:03:35","slug":"ncaa-reveals-why-fg-reduced-emirates-flights-from-21-to-once-weekly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/10\/ncaa-reveals-why-fg-reduced-emirates-flights-from-21-to-once-weekly\/","title":{"rendered":"NCAA reveals why FG reduced Emirates&#8217; flights from 21 to once-weekly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has revealed why the federal government reduced Emirates&#8217; flight operations into the country.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Emirates is the largest airline and one of two flag carriers of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) \u2013 \u2013 the other is Etihad Airways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Effective December 12, 2021, Emirates can only fly into Abuja just once weekly on Thursdays while<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0its Lagos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/02\/ncaa-approves-anambra-airport-for-commercial-flights\/\">flights<\/a> are suspended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The director-general of NCAA, Musa Nuhu via a statement released on Friday said<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that the federal government gave the directive following the refusal of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to grant equal rights to Air Peace, the sole Nigerian airline that operates passenger flights to Sharjah international airport in UAE.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nuhu explained that Hadi Sirika, aviation minister, had graciously granted Emirates Airline\u2019s winter flight schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The schedule consisted of 21 weekly passenger flights to Nigeria, comprising two daily flights to Lagos airport and one daily flight to Abuja airport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He lamented that despite this approval, the GCAA refused to grant Air Peace three weekly frequencies to Sharjah, which the airline requested for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The GCAA, he said, granted Air Peace only one weekly passenger flight frequency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to him, the GCAA had attributed its refusal to grant the three frequencies to the airline to inadequate slots in Sharjah airport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between countries are based on the principle of reciprocity for transparency and fairness to both sides,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhile Nigerian Authorities approved the request of Emirates Airlines, UAE Authorities acted in total disregard of the terms and provisions of the BASA between the two countries by approving one (1) out of the three (3) weekly passenger flight frequencies requested by Air Peace Airlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cDG NCAA held a meeting with his GCAA (UAE) counterpart on Thursday 9\u201d December 2021 at the sidelines of the ICAO Air Negotiation Conference (ICAN) in Bogota, Colombia, which ended in a stalemate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe Honourable Minister of Aviation decided to apply the principle of reciprocity and withdraw the approval of the Winter Schedule given to Emirates Airlines and instead approved one (1) weekly flight frequency to Abuja on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe DG NCAA notified The Country Manager of Emirates Airlines and DG GCAA of the new approved weekly passenger flight schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe want to assure the public that national interests in all aviation matters will be jealously guided and protected while regretting any inconvenience this action might have caused.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Emirates on Last Sunday resumed flight operations to\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nigeria after almost ten months of diplomatic discussions around COVID-19 travel requirements for Nigerian passengers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In February, the airline had instructed Nigerian<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> travellers at the Lagos and Abuja airports to take another PCR test on arrival at Dubai \u2014 the directive led to a ban on Emirates flights in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has revealed why the federal government reduced Emirates&#8217; flight operations into the country.
