{"id":121966,"date":"2021-12-16T21:57:12","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T20:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=121966"},"modified":"2021-12-16T21:57:32","modified_gmt":"2021-12-16T20:57:32","slug":"u-s-airlines-5g-wireless-capable-of-causing-flights-havoc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/16\/u-s-airlines-5g-wireless-capable-of-causing-flights-havoc\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S airlines: 5G wireless capable of causing flights havoc"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Executive of United States Airlines, Scott Kirby has disclosed that plans to use 5G wireless could cause havoc and disrupt thousands of flights daily.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kirby added that such disruption would cost air passengers $1.6 billion annually in delays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The warning was given on Wednesday by Kirby during the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> U.S. Commerce Committee hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He added that the plans to use C-Band spectrum for 5G wireless could delay, divert or cancel about 4 percent daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/10\/ncaa-reveals-why-fg-reduced-emirates-flights-from-21-to-once-weekly\/\">flights<\/a> and affect hundreds of thousands of passengers.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"52\">\n<div class=\"52\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This latest development is coming two days after MTN and Mafab Communications Limited were awarded licences for<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the deployment of the 5G spectrum in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The executive vice-chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Umar Danbatta had also stated that 5G network is safe and necessary for social transformation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"52\">\n<div class=\"52\">\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt would be a catastrophic failure of government,\u201d Kirby said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cComing Jan. 5 \u2014 unless something changes \u2014 we will not be able to use radio altimeters at 40-something of the largest airports in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt is a certainty. This is not a debate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kirby urged AT&amp;T and Verizon Communications to delay plans to use the C-Band spectrum for 5G wireless services on airlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The two had planned to start using cell towers transmitting 5G signals using \u201cnewly acquired midband spectrum that won\u2019t interfere with aircraft signals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They had also agreed to temporarily pause rolling out 5G service on midband spectrum until January 5, when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) raised concerns about the potential interference of 5G with sensitive aircraft electronics like radio altimeters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kirby further added that it would mean that at major U.S. airports in the event of bad weather, cloud cover, or even heavy smog, and could only do visual approaches essentially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">CTIA, an aviation industry group, however, said \u201cfearmongering relies on completely discredited information and deliberate distortions of fact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It added that 5G operates safely and without causing harmful interference to aviation operations in nearly 40 countries around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Executive of United States Airlines, Scott Kirby has disclosed that plans to use 5G wireless could cause havoc and disrupt thousands of flights daily.
