{"id":123619,"date":"2021-12-21T19:33:14","date_gmt":"2021-12-21T18:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=123619"},"modified":"2021-12-21T19:33:14","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T18:33:14","slug":"electoral-act-buhari-betrayed-oath-of-office-an-affront-on-nigerians-serap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/21\/electoral-act-buhari-betrayed-oath-of-office-an-affront-on-nigerians-serap\/","title":{"rendered":"Electoral Act: Buhari betrayed oath of office, an affront on Nigerians \u2013 SERAP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has berated President Muhammadu Buhari for withholding assent on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.<\/p>\n<p>SERAP said Buhari\u2019s failure to assent the bill was a betrayal of the oath of office he swore.<\/p>\n<p>The body stressed that Buhari\u2019s action was an affront to the right of Nigerians to participate in government.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet, SERAP noted that the bill would improve transparency in the country\u2019s electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/09\/twitter-ban-court-dismisses-suit-against-fg-fines-serap-n100000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SERAP<\/a>: \u201cBREAKING: President Buhari\u2019s failure to sign the electoral bill that would improve transparency of the electoral process is a betrayal of his constitutional oath of office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an affront to Nigerians\u2019 right to participate in their government. He must immediately sign the bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buhari had withheld assent of the electoral Act due to the situation in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s position was contained in a letter he sent to the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan.<\/p>\n<p>Buhari also cited the high cost of conducting direct primaries, the security challenge of monitoring the election, violation of citizens\u2019 rights and marginalization of small political parties, amongst other things as reasons why he won\u2019t assent the bill.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has berated President Muhammadu Buhari for withholding assent on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.
