{"id":123648,"date":"2021-12-21T20:15:49","date_gmt":"2021-12-21T19:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=123648"},"modified":"2021-12-21T20:15:49","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T19:15:49","slug":"electoral-bill-ortom-hails-buhari-for-withholding-assent-over-direct-primary-clause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/21\/electoral-bill-ortom-hails-buhari-for-withholding-assent-over-direct-primary-clause\/","title":{"rendered":"Electoral bill: Ortom hails Buhari for withholding assent over direct primary clause"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for withholding assent to the electoral act amendment bill.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the\u00a0national assembly had transmitted the bill to the president on November 19, with recommendations on electronic transmission of results and direct primaries for political parties.<\/p>\n<p>President Buhari via a letter forwarded to the national assembly while stating his decision for withholding assent kicked against the recommendations on adopting only direct primaries, citing concerns on rights violation as well as cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my considered position that the political parties should be allowed to freely exercise right of choice in deciding which of direct or indirect primary to adopt in the conduct of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/13\/direct-primary-will-cause-anarchy-in-party-elections-says-pdp\/\">primary elections<\/a> as their respective realities may permit,\u201d the president had said in the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the development, Ortom, while addressing journalists in Makurdi, said direct primary is an expensive mode of selecting candidates.<\/p>\n<p>The Benue governor said political parties should be allowed to decide on selecting which kind of primary to deploy for selecting candidates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to appreciate the national assembly for amending the electoral act to include direct transmission of results. I am particularly happy that the NASS listened to Nigerians and passed the electronic transmission of results,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish in the same manner to appreciate the president for withholding assent on the direct primaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI appeal that he also listens to Nigerians on the economy and security of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said the consensus mode was a preferred option, adding that \u201cmembers of the party come together and agree on a candidate thereby saving money, time and it is devoid of rancour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While speaking further on the electronic transmission of election results, Ortom said \u201cit will engender transparency in the electoral system and also add value to the system\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for withholding assent to the electoral act amendment bill.
