{"id":125390,"date":"2021-12-25T16:34:11","date_gmt":"2021-12-25T15:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=125390"},"modified":"2021-12-25T17:31:03","modified_gmt":"2021-12-25T16:31:03","slug":"medical-council-removes-n900000-fee-for-foreign-trained-doctors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/25\/medical-council-removes-n900000-fee-for-foreign-trained-doctors\/","title":{"rendered":"Medical council removes N900,000 fee for foreign-trained doctors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mental and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has removed the N900,000 mandatory fee for foreign-trained medical doctors.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a new statement released by the council.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the council said<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0its previous publication that foreign-trained doctors are to undergo a six-month mandatory attachment programme in teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/16\/human-rights-lawyer-sues-hospitals-nigerian-minister-for-n20billion-over-wifes-death\/\">hospitals<\/a> has been withdrawn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recall that<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the medical council asked all medical graduates who schooled abroad and seek to take the council\u2019s assessment examination will undergo a six-month mandatory attachment programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Also, applicants who are Nigerian citizens were required to pay a non-refundable fee of N900,000, while non-citizens were to pay N1,400,000 for the programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The decision of the medical council did not go down well with many Nigerians in the wake of the massive emigration of health workers to other countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Owing to the directive, the house of representatives mandated its<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0committee on healthcare services to investigate the council over the directive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the new directive, the council said candidates who have paid the N10,000 registration fee will be refunded, adding that it will publish another curriculum for the training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The council also deleted the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0previous directive published on its website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is to inform the general public, that following the public reactions to the MDCN publication on the mandatory six-month teaching hospitals attachment programme for foreign-trained medical and dental graduates, especially the petition by a coalition of parents of foreign-trained medical doctors to the national assembly,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAnd based on the outcome of the meetings MDCN held with the leadership of joint senate committee on health and house of representatives committee on health care services and the house of representatives committee on public petition, MDCN hereby states as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe MDCN hereby withdraws the publication on the six-month attachment for foreign-trained medical and dental graduates and candidates are now left with the discretion to seek knowledge that will assist them with the assessment examination wherever and however they so desire. Candidates who have paid N10,000 (ten thousand naira) registration fees will have their money refunded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMDCN will publish in due course the curriculum for the training which has been developed by the examiners to guide the candidates in preparation for the examination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis curriculum was brought out from the \u201cRed Book\u201d which is available on the MDCN website.
