{"id":125936,"date":"2021-12-27T05:41:32","date_gmt":"2021-12-27T04:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=125936"},"modified":"2021-12-27T05:45:39","modified_gmt":"2021-12-27T04:45:39","slug":"fg-to-shut-down-illegal-money-lenders-violating-consumer-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/27\/fg-to-shut-down-illegal-money-lenders-violating-consumer-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"FG to shut down illegal money lenders violating consumer rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has stated that the joint committee tackling violation of consumer rights in the money lending industry will shut down illegal businesses.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Sunday by the chief executive officer of FCCPC, <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Babatunde Irukera, the chief executive officer of FCCPC in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Irukere, the committee<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">would commence operation soon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The joint committee is made up of representatives from FCCPC, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/21\/dss-hands-over-truck-four-suspected-illegal-oil-dealers-to-efcc\/\">(EFCC)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Other agencies participating in the committee are the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Irukera said that the committee would also be writing provisional regulations for the money lending companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe joint committee is meeting and agreeing on how to proceed, but I can say that two of the entities of the joint committee will be going on the field and doing enforcement work now, very shortly,\u201d NAN quoted Irukera as saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey will be closing down businesses and engaging App stores to shut down certain applications that are infringing and abusive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are also going to be writing interim regulations and some basic information for all these money lenders to provide information so that people will know who they are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSome of them are just apps that we do not even know who the promoters are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSo we are going to provide certain frameworks for them to comply with before doing business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the increasing number of consumer complaints about services by insurance companies, Irukera said that the commission was progressing in their memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to him, it is anticipated that as the MoU will be completed early next year, there will be more industry-wide interventions in that space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe get a lot more complaints about the insured who have paid their premium and have not been settled, and so we are engaging NAICOM on that,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has stated that the joint committee tackling violation of consumer rights in the money lending industry will shut down illegal businesses.
