{"id":127934,"date":"2021-12-31T20:32:27","date_gmt":"2021-12-31T19:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=127934"},"modified":"2021-12-31T20:32:27","modified_gmt":"2021-12-31T19:32:27","slug":"dowen-college-sylvesters-family-kicks-as-police-release-housemasters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/31\/dowen-college-sylvesters-family-kicks-as-police-release-housemasters\/","title":{"rendered":"Dowen College: Sylvester\u2019s family kicks as police release housemasters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The family of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni, who died in a controversial circumstances after he was allegedly attacked by some seniors in his school has faulted the Lagos State Police Command for releasing the housemaster and other staff of Dowen College, Lekki.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that the deceased\u2019s cousin, Perry Oromoni, has taken to social media to alleged that some senior pupils of the college\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/gist\/2021\/12\/01\/12-year-old-boy-allegedly-beaten-to-death-by-fellow-students-for-refusing-to-join-cult-in-lagos-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beat him up in his hostel room for refusing to join a cult<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of pain in his legs and hip following an injury he sustained while playing football.<\/p>\n<p>The Lagos State Government had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/03\/lagos-govt-shuts-down-dowen-college-indefinitely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shut down the school<\/a>\u00a0indefinitely to ensure thorough investigation.<\/p>\n<p>An autopsy conducted by the Consultant Pathologist, Dr. Clement Vhriterhire, at the Central Hospital Warri concluded that Sylvester died of \u201cacute lung injury due to chemical intoxication in a background of blunt force trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The student\u2019s corpse was, however, conveyed to Lagos and a fresh autopsy was ordered by the police.<\/p>\n<p>This publication recalls that the five accused students who were remanded were also released after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/21\/sylvester-oromoni-alleged-bullies-of-dowen-college-student-granted-n1m-bail-each\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court granted them N1m bail each<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the outgoing Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the housemasters had also been released since the court order to remand them had expired.<\/p>\n<p>Odumosu added that the police had concluded its investigations and forwarded its report to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and had received a response from the DPP.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThe corpse was brought from Delta to Lagos. The post-mortem was carried out in Lagos. The result is out. As of now, it has not brought out the issue of murder on anybody (sic). Toxicology is still to be carried out which is the final one. The interim one has not. Based on that, the court order we got has elapsed and we have released the housemaster and others on bail as of yesterday because they have not been indicted of murder. It is only murder cases that are not subject to bail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the medical report has not indicted them so far, I think there is a need for them to have their freedom because bail is not the end of the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Sylvester\u2019s father disagreed with the police, insisting that it was wrong to have released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/23\/dowen-college-late-sylvester-oromonis-family-kicks-against-n1million-bail-granted-to-suspects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dowen College<\/a> workers when things had not reached a logical conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Oromoni dared CP Odumosu to make the autopsy report public.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cI saw the press briefing by the police commissioner that no one has been indicted and they have been released. The autopsy result conducted in Lagos has not been made public. The one we conducted in Warri has not been made public. So, for him to conclude that no one has been indicted is not acceptable to the family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew this would happen and that was why we called on the Inspector-General of Police to take over. We have our own autopsy report from Warri. The report was handed over to the police in Delta and we are relying on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police have led the Nigerian public and we are not comfortable with this. The police acted hurriedly. We sent the corpse to Lagos but why are they waiting for the toxicology report from Delta?
