Former Super Eagles midfielder, Seyi Olofinjana, has opened up on why he turned down the country\u2019s national teams technical director role after he was approached by the Nigeria Football Federation.<\/p>\n

After a professional career that spanned 16 years, the former Super Eagles star went into management and was named loan manager at Wolverhampton Wanderers.<\/p>\n

At the Molineux Stadium, he played a key role in ensuring that the Wanderers maintained their English elite division status.<\/p>\n

According to reports, NFF president Amaju in 2020 approached Olofinjana offering the 40-year-old the role currently occupied by Austin Eguavoen, which he turned down.<\/p>\n

In an interview with BBC Sport Africa, the former Wolves midfielder opened up on why he turned down the offer but leave room open for a future appointment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was difficult, but at the same time, easy,\u201d Olofinjana<\/a> recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the federation made it a little bit easier for me to make that judgement call. There were certain questions I asked of the federation that they weren\u2019t able to answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat needs doing? Where do they think we are as a nation? Where do we need to get to? How quickly do we need to get to those places?<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t get answers to those questions and that is the day-to-day job for me. If there\u2019s no clarity, there\u2019s no going forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo I regret saying no? Absolutely not. Is there a part of me that thinks it could be a good opportunity for me to go and put myself in the history books and try to help my people? Absolutely! I\u2019m still looking for that opportunity<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll continue to knock on the door. Any day. I don\u2019t know the day. I\u2019m Nigerian. I can\u2019t change that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cThe talents have never been the problem of Nigeria. I think it (the problem) is in the philosophy, it\u2019s in the structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we are living in the moment as a people. We think \u2018What can we do in the next Nations Cup?\u2019 without thinking further ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tell ourselves \u2018Oh, we\u2019ve prepared well. The boys have done well but there has to be a plan behind the way we play football,\u201d Olofinjana added.<\/p>\n

\u201cGermany won the World Cup (in 2014) but they didn\u2019t win it when they hosted in 2006. But there was a plan \u2013 a 10-year plan to win the World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n
