{"id":12842,"date":"2021-03-25T02:44:55","date_gmt":"2021-03-25T01:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=12842"},"modified":"2021-03-25T02:44:55","modified_gmt":"2021-03-25T01:44:55","slug":"gumi-proposes-amnesty-for-bandits-says-bandits-wont-surrender-if-they-dont-feel-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/25\/gumi-proposes-amnesty-for-bandits-says-bandits-wont-surrender-if-they-dont-feel-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"Gumi proposes amnesty for bandits, says bandits won\u2019t surrender if they don\u2019t feel safe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi has said that bandits will not let go of their arms if they are not sure of their safety and rehabilitation into the society.<\/p>\n<p>Gumi stated this on Wednesday during a virtual event hosted by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was organised to discuss Nigeria\u2019s security challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The cleric also proposed that the Federal Government grants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/23\/north-west-governors-order-bandits-to-vacate-forest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bandits<\/a> amnesty in the same vein as the Niger Delta militants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/06\/stop-demanding-amnesty-for-bandits-masari-tackles-gumi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gumi<\/a> said: \u201cLooking at their educational status, they don\u2019t have any official or unofficial education. How can a nation which is serious about security leave a chunk of its society so uneducated, leave it to arms and drugs? I don\u2019t think that society is serious. How can we disperse them, rehabilitate them because they are holding arms to protect themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you don\u2019t show them they\u2019re safe in the larger society, there\u2019s no way they can leave their weapon. And that\u2019s why we asked for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/25\/buhari-rules-out-amnesty-for-bandits-criminals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amnesty<\/a> for them just like we had in the Niger Delta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not justifying their kidnapping, what they do is crime. But their kidnapping is to get more money to buy more weapons so that they can protect themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that government should negotiate with the bandits because they took to weapon and violence when they felt nobody was listening to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody can justify criminality, what we are saying is what we saw in the forest is an ethnic war going on between people in the forest and the neighboring villages and hamlets. When the herder felt he has grievances and nobody was listening to him, he took on weapons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when we went there and they saw a listening ear, they were ready to negotiate, tell us their grievances, and ready to incorporate into the society.
