{"id":129443,"date":"2022-01-04T08:28:44","date_gmt":"2022-01-04T07:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=129443"},"modified":"2022-01-04T08:28:44","modified_gmt":"2022-01-04T07:28:44","slug":"new-boy-ferran-torres-tests-positive-for-coronavirus-hours-after-barcelona-unveiling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/04\/new-boy-ferran-torres-tests-positive-for-coronavirus-hours-after-barcelona-unveiling\/","title":{"rendered":"New boy Ferran Torres tests positive for coronavirus hours after Barcelona unveiling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ferran Torres, who joined FC Barcelona from Manchester City, is eager to get started, but he may have to wait a bit longer.<\/p>\n<p>This is in response to reports that he tested positive for the coronavirus just hours after his debut.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old Spain international has agreed to a five-and-a-half-year deal worth an initial 46.7 million pounds plus a further 8.5 million pounds in add-ons.<\/p>\n<p>The arrangement includes a buy-out clause for one billion euros (841 million pounds).<\/p>\n<p>Torres had hoped to be back in action for the Spanish Super Cup semi-final on January 12 against Real Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>But his debut could be delayed after the Catalan club announced he had tested positive for COVID-19 along with team-mate Pedri.<\/p>\n<p>A Barca statement on Monday evening read: \u201cPedri and Ferran Torres have tested positive for COVID-19. The players are in good health and are isolated at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Torres was presented at the Nou Camp on Monday morning and spoke of having his focus set firmly on taking the LaLiga giants back to their former glories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am facing this challenge with ambition, humility, and a lot of desire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I left Manchester City, I had the idea of coming back to LaLiga and Barca showed an interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am an ambitious player and I like a challenge. I want to take Barca back to where it belongs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Torres signed for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/28\/manchester-city-thrash-10-man-arsenal-at-etihad\/\">Manchester City<\/a> from Valencia in the summer of 2020 for 20.9 million pounds.<\/p>\n<p>But he spent just 16 months at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 16 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions.<\/p>\n<p>The forward had made only seven club appearances this season, after breaking a metatarsal while on international duty during October.<\/p>\n<p>Torres was not thought to be unhappy at Manchester City, with whom he won the English Premier League (EPL) last season.<\/p>\n<p>He also helped them to reach the final of the UEFA Champions League in the same season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Manchester City manager Pep] Guardiola is one of the best in the world and he played me in different positions,\u201d Torres said on FC Barcelona\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have learned a lot from him at Manchester City and will take many nice memories of my time there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can play across various positions and I will adapt well. I will play in the position that the [Barca] coach says, it does not matter to me which one he asks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta is confident Torres can fulfill his potential at the Nou Camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are young, but you already have plenty of experience,\u201d Laporta said to Torres during the presentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/09\/oshoala-wins-spanish-womens-league-title-with-barca\/\">Ferran\u2019s<\/a> situation and we were very pleased that he wanted to come to Barca so much. He is a great player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barca have been beset by financial difficulties in recent months but were able to fund the Torres deal after securing a bank loan.<\/p>\n<p>Director of football Mateu Alemany is confident there will be no issues in completing the formalities of the transfer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth of the situation is that when we signed Ferran Torres, we knew we did not have room in terms of salaries,\u201d Alemany said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we have been making moves in different areas and we are convinced we can register him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ferran Torres, who joined FC Barcelona from Manchester City, is eager to get started, but he may have to wait a bit longer.
