While the globe is dealing with the extremely contagious Omicron strain of Covid, scientists in France have discovered a new variation with 46 mutations that might be more dangerous.<\/p>\n

According to independent.co.uk, the new B.1.640.2 variety, dubbed IHU, has infected 12 persons in southeastern France.<\/p>\n

According to researchers in an article published on medRxiv, the first incidence was related to a person with a travel history to Cameroon, Western Africa.<\/p>\n

Experts were quick to point out, however, that just because a new variety had been identified did not guarantee IHU would be as contagious as previous strains, such as Omicron<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the analysis, the authors found \u201c46 mutations\u201d which had not been spotted in other countries, nor labelled a variant under investigation by the WHO.<\/p>\n

The genomes were obtained by next-generation sequencing. The authors of the paper claimed that the person who was identified with the IHU variant was fully-vaccinated. The person tested positive for covid after returning from a three-day trip to Cameroon.<\/p>\n

The authors of the research paper said \u201csubsequent detection\u2026 of three mutations in the spike gene to screen for variants\u2026 did not correspond to the pattern of the Delta variant involved in almost all SARS-CoV-2 infections at that time\u201d.<\/p>\n

Arguing that the emergence of the new variant emphasised the importance of \u201cgenomic surveillance\u201d, the authors said their observations once again showed the \u201cunpredictability of the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a long Twitter thread, epidemiologist and a fellow at Federation of American Scientists, Eric Feigl-Ding said the new variant was being monitored to evaluate how infectious or dangerous it could prove to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are scores of new variants discovered all the time, but it does not necessarily mean they will be more dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat makes a variant more well-known and dangerous is its ability to multiply because of the number of mutations it has in relation to the original virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThis is when it becomes a \u2018variant of concern\u2019 \u2013 like Omicron, which is more contagious and more past immunity evasive. It remains to be seen in which category this new variant will fall.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
