{"id":130147,"date":"2022-01-05T14:59:53","date_gmt":"2022-01-05T13:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=130147"},"modified":"2022-01-05T16:52:23","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T15:52:23","slug":"fg-imposes-n10-per-litre-excise-duty-on-carbonated-drinks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/05\/fg-imposes-n10-per-litre-excise-duty-on-carbonated-drinks\/","title":{"rendered":"FG imposes N10 per litre excise duty on carbonated drinks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government has introduced an excise duty of N10 per litre on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Excise duty is a form of tax imposed on the production, licensing and sale of goods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was made known by minister of finance, budget and national planning, Zainab Ahmed<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0during the public presentation of the 2022 Appropriation Act on Wednesday in Abuja.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to her, the new policy introduced is in the Finance Act signed into law by<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0President Muhammadu Buhari on December 31, 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The minister of finance, Zainab Ahmed in 2019 had announced that the government may introduce excise duty on carbonated drinks.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2020, Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), had proposed the collection of excise duty on soft drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He had also put forward the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0same proposal in 2021 at an interactive session on the 2022-2024 medium-term expenditure framework (MTEF), organised by the house of representatives committee on finance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Apart from the new \u2018Sugar Tax\u2019 in section 17, Ahmed said the 2021 finance Act also raised excise duties and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/21\/nigeria-lost-revenues-over-non-performance-of-atala-oilfield-sylva\/\">revenues<\/a> for the health sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The minister said the excise duty on soft drinks would discourage excessive consumption of sugar beverages which contributes to diabetes, obesity among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThere\u2019s now an excise duty of N10\/ per litre imposed on all non-alcoholic and sweetened beverages,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAnd this is to discourage excessive consumption of sugar in beverages which contributes to a number of health conditions including diabetes and obesity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBut also used to raise excise duties and revenues for health-related and other critical expenditures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is in line also with the 2022 budget priorities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government has introduced an excise duty of N10 per litre on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages.
